Logo der Universität Tartu

At present, the University of Tartu has 17,000 students, of whom 800 are from other countries. It has 3,800 employees, 1,800 are academics, and half of those are professors. The university offers numerous BA-, MA- and doctorate programmes. The mission of the University of Tartu is to promote research and knowledge in all fields of its activities, to provide higher education based on professional research and academic study at all levels and to offer services in research, development and education. The university has 65 partner universities in 23 countries. The robust research potential of the university is evidenced by the fact that it is the only Baltic university that has been invited to join the Coimbra Group, a prestigious club of renowned research universities.

The mission of the Institute of History and Archaeology is to guarantee the sustainable development of academic research, to teach history, archaeology, archival studies and art history as well as to train teachers of history and civics. The objective of this teacher training is to offer competences and skills necessary for working as teachers of history and civics at the 2nd and 3rd levels of basic school and in grammar school.

The institute has a broad academic basis. Courses offered also include extra-University areas such as, for example, monitoring the teaching of history in our general educational schools. In this context, numerous history textbooks for secondary school have been written by our academic staff.

In 2008 the Centre for Didactics of History and Civics was established, the main aim of which is to support and develop the initial and in-service training of history teachers as well as to write and publish literature on History Didactics. The series “Ajalugukoolitunnis” [“History in School Lessons”], which introduces sources and possibilities on how to deal methodically with a variety of historical topics, is published by the Centre. In this series, historians, experts on History Didactics and history teachers cooperate. The authors discuss the relevance and necessity of the respective topics in the context of today’s world.
