The University of Siegen, founded in 1972, currently has 18,604 students and 2,196 employees, 1,503 of which are academic staff. Subjects offered range from the humanities to economics and science as well as engineering and architecture. The University of Siegen offers various degree options including Bachelor and Master of Arts, doctorate and habilitation (post-doctoral lecturing qualification) programmes.

Students from all over the world attend the University of Siegen. They are engaged in international studies or have come to Siegen through exchange programmes like ERASMUS. The University has numerous partnerships. ERASMUS programmes offered in Siegen enable students to go abroad. Students from Siegen regularly participate in the COMENIUS Assistant Teacher programme.

The Department of History Didactics is the key institution for the education of future teachers of history. Students are introduced to theories of the didactics of history as well as new fields of research in the history didactics and history culture and supervised in the practical phases of their teacher training. The main research projects of the 14 academic staff members and doctoral candidates in the department are History of historical teaching; Historical textbook analysis; Gender History; Biographies; Bilingual teaching; Modern and contemporary political and social history as well as History of mentalities; Regional and transnational history; History of borders and border experiences; Archives and museums as learning places and locations of history culture; Imparting history through popular media in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Cooperation with schools and museums in the region is very close, enabling the students to establish contacts.

The Department of History Didactics has been and still is partner in numerous EU-Projects (http://www.uni-siegen.de/phil/geschichte/lehrstuehle/dgng/projekte/).

The departments of the overarching Historical Seminar closely cooperate in the interest of high quality, broadly based teacher training. The departments of History Didactics, Modern History and European Contemporary History Since 1945 regularly offer joint colloquia and conferences. A shared research focus lies on historical culture and memory culture in a European and global transnational perspective.

Under the auspices of the Department of History Didactics the Historical Seminar has been hosting successful (often international) teacher training sessions and conferences since 2009. These provide a forum for the dialogue between history scholars, didacticians and history teachers.

The Faculty of Arts at the University of Siegen cultivates a long tradition of international networking in the form of research cooperation, projects, publications, colloquia and conferences.
