The University of Social Sciences (SAN) is a private university situated in Lodz, the third-largest city of Poland. It was established by the Association of Polish Educators in January 1995. Currently there are about 20,000 students enrolled in the Academy. The University offers PhD, MA and BA studies, post-graduate courses as well as specialized training courses on daily, evening and weekend and extramural basis. For several years, the University has been offering an MBA double diploma with Clark University (USA). The MBA programme is designed for management professionals and specialists who wish to expand their qualifications through a managerial component. The programme guarantees both wide and specialized management knowledge in the fields of communication, marketing, information technology systems and healthcare.

The University has a special unit responsible for the creation and providing of e-learning courses (as whole studies and short courses), the Polish Open Academy. There are also several branches of the University outside of Lodz.

The University offers B.A. and M.A. degrees in Pedagogy and Cultural Studies. The University also cooperates on a permanent level with lower and upper secondary schools in the Lodz region. In this context, in-service training for teachers in different fields is offered.

Since 2005, Społeczna Akademia Nauk has gained experience in EU educational programmes as a coordinator and partner. Since the same year, a Fundraising Department (4 persons permanent staff) at the University has been responsible for the creation and management of EU projects and has dealt with 62 projects from different EU programmes. In the subject of history, the University participated in the following EU-COMENIUS projects:

  • “MIH - Multicultural Interdisciplinary Handbook: tools for learning history and geography in a multicultural perspective”
  • “European history crossroads as pathways to intercultural and media education”

Some years ago, the University also participated in two projects under the Culture programme, which were closely connected with history:

  • “U.R.M.E. – Urban Remembrance and Memory of Europe”
  • “S.E.ME – Sharing European Memories”
