STEM-Education in the Era of AI (STEM-Edu-AI)

Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly important across education, including schools, higher education, and vocational education and training. At the same time, AI is raising fundamental questions about teaching, learning, curriculum design, assessment, professional practice, and educational innovation in STEM fields.

STEM-Education in the Era of AI is an international conference dedicated to the role of AI in STEM education. It aims to bring together researchers, teachers, teacher educators, university lecturers, policy actors, school administrators, EdTech professionals, industry representatives, and others interested in shaping the future of STEM education.

Dates: 8-10 March 2027

Venue: University of Siegen, Campus Unteres Schloss, Siegen, Germany

Format: In-person conference

Conference language: English

Organizer: Mathematics Education Research Group, University of Siegen

Conference participation: Free of charge (except for the optional conference dinner)

Conference Topics

Description Theme 1

Topic 1: Teaching with AI

This topic focuses on the use of AI by STEM teachers and university lecturers, for example in lesson planning, the development of teaching resources, and the reflection on teaching practice. It also addresses the integration of AI into classroom and course settings, including questions of instructional design and forms of instrumental orchestration. Another important aspect concerns assessment and evaluation with AI.

Description Theme 2

Topic 2: Learning with AI

This topic places students, and other learners at the centre. It asks how AI can support the development of STEM-related competences such as modelling, problem solving, logical reasoning, programming, and experimentation. It also addresses how learners use AI in STEM education and how AI may reshape classroom roles, participation, and learner agency.

Description Theme 3

Topic 3: Teaching and Learning about AI

This topic addresses learning about AI itself. The conference invites contributions that explore how STEM subjects can contribute to the development of AI literacy among students and other groups of people, and how this relates to established subject-specific and interdisciplinary concepts such as computational thinking.

Programs and Participation

The conference will feature two keynote lectures (Prof. Dr. Manolis Mavrikis, University College London & Prof. Dr. Xiaoming Zhai, University of Georgia (US)) and one plenary panel discussion. In addition, participants will be able to contribute actively to the conference programme through the following formats:

  • Talk (20-minute presentation plus 5-minute discussion)
  • Workshop (50 minutes)
  • Poster
  • Innovation Expo stand

The Innovation Expo is designed as an interactive space for schools, start-ups, researchers, and other innovators to present promising ideas, tools, and hands-on developments related to AI in STEM education.

Peer-reviewed Proceedings

For academic contribution formats including talks, workshops, and posters, submissions to the conference proceedings consist of full papers of 4 – 6 pages in the conference template, regardless of presentation format. For Innovation Expo contributions, only a short abstract is required.

Registration and Submission

Submission of contributions and registration are handled through the conference management system ConfTool: [link]
