Healthcare Management Science
The course Healthcare Management Science covers the topics: Introduction to health care operations management, Health care planning and control framework, Data envelopment analysis in hospitals, Case mix planning, Operating room planning and scheduling, Workload management, Nurse rostering, Physician scheduling, Appointment scheduling. Students get familiar with standard models and methods. They are able to model problems and to solve them with appropriate solution algorithms.
Learning Objectives
Subject-related skills: The students are familiar with the standard problems and models in healthcare management science. They are able to model problems and to solve these models with appropriate mathematical methods. The students are able to understand the approaches to tackle several planning problems in health care and they are able to understand more complex solution approaches in operations management.
Methodical skills: Students are able to analyze health operations management problems and to make sound decisions in the field of health services. Students are familiar with strategic, tactical and operational planning and scheduling steps in a hospital and in patient care in general. The students are able to implement procedures, assess these approaches in terms of effectiveness and efficiency, and present their findings in class.
Interdisciplinary skills: Students are able to apply what they have learned to other subjects of their course of study. Students are able to apply these skills in everyday life. In particular, students are familiar with sound decision-making and they are able to translate complex problems into efficient decision-making processes. The students are able to make sound decisions. They are able to work with scientific literature and understand complex problems.
Key qualifications: Students are able to analyze questions from business life and problems from everyday life. In doing so, they understand how to manage tasks, inventory, services, and employees. Students are able to present their finding under consideration of audience and situation. They are able to question scientific literature and achieved results.
