Department of Architectural Informatics and Design - LAB42

The teaching and research area "Architectural Informatics and Design" supervises students in the Department of Architecture with a focus on Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD), visualization and animation, information and communication systems, internet applications and multimedia. In the field of design, cooperative working methods are taught and creative potential is unleashed through media-experimental design.

Students of architecture and urban planning are offered basic training in computer-aided design methods using various CAD systems, whereby the use of proprietary systems in teaching should be avoided. A modular training concept is designed to enable students to react flexibly to every challenge of future professional practice. In the first two semesters of undergraduate studies, the basics of computer-aided representation and modeling are taught in lectures and tutorials and initial interactions are developed with the help of Internet authoring systems.

In the main course of study, emphasis is placed on free design work in advanced seminars in order to train creativity in dealing with digital media. These include multimedia and experimental media design projects, as well as the major design projects of the main course, in which students have to work independently on a completed problem from planning practice.

One focus of this work is cooperative design in large groups (kegg for short) in which the integration of all those involved in the planning process to achieve a common goal is in the foreground. These processes are practiced in seminar style, discussed in plenary sessions and digitally processed. In the field of urban planning, municipal information management will become increasingly important and will be reflected in the use of geographic information systems, database applications, citizen information, information and query systems. Here, the planning content is processed accordingly, linked with factual data records and databases and made available via the Internet.

IT University Copenhagen 2025

The diploma theses on offer pursue in-depth study of computer-aided design methods in the subject areas of tele-cooperative design work; workflow management systems (complex procedures in a planning process can be represented and modeled); designing three-dimensional structures in virtual reality; the development of corresponding interfaces; interactive, multimedia design; the simulation of planning-relevant aspects on distributed systems; the programming of growth and densification processes and much more.

In line with the interdisciplinary orientation of the teaching and research area, the training of architects and urban planners focuses on cross-references and interdisciplinary cooperation with other departments at the University of Siegen (e.g. Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, etc.) as well as with national and international institutes. The exchange of ideas between students and teaching staff and the joint development of solutions is intensified through the use of digital media (learning on demand, telepresence, etc.). Computer workstations with appropriate peripherals are available here to enable on-site work.
The creation of an experimental, constantly changing environment with a laboratory character promotes creative processes and is reflected in the name of the new teaching and research area:
The lab42.
