How to Participate in College Sports
University Sports Classes
You need a Sports Pass to take university sports classes. It’s a flat-rate pass: With the Sports Pass, you can sign up for any university sports class at no additional cost. The Sports Pass is valid for the entire semester, including the break between semesters. Registration for university sports courses takes place weekly. Courses can always be booked six days before the next session. You purchase the sports pass when you book your first class. Take advantage of the early-bird period at the start of the semester. Then you’ll have access to the entire sports program for just €29!
Partnership Courses
Partnership courses are offered in collaboration with regional sports clubs and commercial sports organizations. These courses generally take place at the partner organization’s facilities under their instruction. You only need to book these courses once. You’ll then receive a guaranteed spot in the class for the entire booking period. A participation fee is due at the time of booking. You don’t need the Sports Card to book partnership classes.

Terms of Use & Participation
As of October 6, 2025
SCOPE OF APPLICATION
These Terms of Use apply to all sports facilities managed by the Central Operations Unit for Sports and Physical Activity (ZB-SB). This includes the AR-E and AR-S sports facilities as well as the “Grüne Mitte” outdoor sports facilities.
The ZB-SB may establish different regulations for courses in the Sports Certificate Program and for sporting events or similar activities.
FACILITIES AND ACCESS
Sports Facilities
The following are considered sports facilities: the entire AR-S building, the section of the AR-E building behind the main entrance (Room 9.2.2/3), and the outdoor sports facilities.
Sports Facility Hours
The sports facilities are generally available only during the university’s opening hours. All persons must leave the sports facilities by 9:30 p.m.
Access to the sports facilities may be further restricted by the ZB-SB, particularly if safety regulations require it.
Outdoor Sports Facilities (starting in the 2026 summer semester)
Outdoor sports facilities include the small soccer field, the volleyball court, the slackline, the small basketball court, and the bocce court.
Sports Hall
The sports hall comprises the interior space with the sports area and the storage rooms (garages).
Participants may only enter the sports hall if their instructor is also present.
As a general rule, only those authorized to participate in the respective sports activity are permitted to be there. Spectators and guests are not permitted.
Studio
The studio includes the exercise area and the lounge with a small kitchen. The studio may be used by participants in university sports provided it is not occupied. In addition, a responsible instructor or ZB-SB staff member must also be present there.
Changing Rooms, Showers, Restrooms, and Hallways
These facilities may only be used in direct connection with the ZB-SB’s sports programs and must be left clean after use. Prolonged stays in the changing rooms, shower rooms, restrooms, and hallways are prohibited (due to contamination).
Common Areas
Only rooms that are clearly designated for use as common areas are considered such. Locker rooms, storage rooms, and hallways are not common areas.
First-Aid Areas
Every sports facility has a first-aid area. It is equipped with an emergency phone, an emergency information board, evacuation plans, and first-aid supplies.
The first-aid area must be freely accessible to everyone present at the sports facility. However, participants may only remain in the first-aid areas with the approval of the activity leaders or in an emergency.
Grandstands
Participants are generally permitted to enter the bleachers only in an emergency, after consulting with the exercise instructor, and only if the bleachers have been expressly opened by the ZB-SB.
SPORTS FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT
Permanently Installed Electrical Systems
All permanently installed sports equipment may be operated exclusively by the exercise leaders or in consultation with them. This includes the partition curtain, the sound system, and the basketball hoops.
Gymnastics and Net Equipment
Gymnastics equipment (rings, parallel bars, ropes, high bar) and net equipment (volleyball, badminton) may only be set up and taken down under the supervision of the class instructor.
Goals
Unscrewing and moving the goals may only be done under the supervision of the class instructor. Goals that have been unscrewed must be placed with the open side against the wall and secured to prevent them from tipping over. Unscrewed goals may not be used during sports activities. Unscrewed goals must be dismantled again after the sports session has ended.
Electric Ball Pumps
Electric ball pumps may only be used by the coaching staff or in consultation with the coaching staff.
Equipment
Equipment refers to all devices and materials that are not permanently installed.
Equipment is issued by the class instructors. Participants are prohibited from taking equipment without authorization.
Equipment is intended solely for its intended use and must be treated with care. If used for purposes other than those intended, it must be ensured that no damage or hazards result. Responsibility lies with the instructors.
Equipment must be properly stored after use.
Damaged equipment must not be used further. Discarded equipment must be placed in the first-aid area and marked as defective.
It is prohibited to remove equipment from the sports facilities.
Any equipment brought onto the premises must not cause damage or pose a hazard.
In the gym, setting up furniture (e.g., chairs) and using items such as skateboards, bicycles, or longboards is prohibited.
RULES OF CONDUCT
Use of Rooms and Areas
All rooms and areas may only be used for their intended purposes. Sports activities are permitted only on the designated sports areas.
Shoes
Footwear worn during sports activities must be suitable for the respective sport. It must not cause any damage to the floor or sports equipment through negligence, nor pose a hazard to participants. In the gym and fitness studio, footwear must have abrasion-resistant soles and be clean.
Lighting, Windows, and Doors
Please practice energy-saving behavior.
Windows and side doors may only be opened and closed by the instructor or in consultation with the instructor. Self-closing fire doors must not be wedged open.
Emergency exits and doors must remain clear at all times. It is prohibited to place gym bags, boxes, or benches in the passageway leading to the doors.
Photography and Videography
Photography and video recording in the sports facilities are permitted only with the prior express consent of all individuals involved. Entering the sports facility does not constitute blanket consent.
Food and Beverages
The sports facility must not be soiled by food or drink. Eating in the sports hall is strictly prohibited.
Bringing breakable bottles or tableware into the facility is prohibited. This generally includes any glass or porcelain tableware.
Surveys
Surveys that go beyond the organization of university sports events require prior approval from the ZB-SB.
Advertising and Posters
It is strictly prohibited to advertise non-university, commercial events in the sports facilities. Posting posters in the sports facilities is prohibited.
Bicycles, Skateboards, Longboards, etc.
Bicycles, etc., may only be parked in the areas designated for that purpose. It is prohibited to park bicycles, etc., in the hallways or locker rooms.
Alcohol and Smoking
Smoking is prohibited in sports facilities. Alcohol consumption is permitted only in small quantities during festive events and requires prior approval from the ZB-SB management.
Symbols
It is prohibited to wear clothing bearing discriminatory or anti-democratic symbols. Such symbols may not be displayed in any other way within the sports facilities either.
Valuables
The University of Siegen assumes no liability for valuables brought onto the premises, unless the loss or damage is due to willful misconduct or gross negligence on the part of university employees.
Use of Electrical Outlets
Charging any electronic devices at the power outlets in the sports facilities is prohibited. This includes smartphones and laptops (fire safety).
Temperature
If the ambient temperature on the sports field exceeds 26 °C, the exercise instructors will inform participants of the increased health risks. Sports activities are prohibited when the ambient temperature reaches 30 °C or higher. All persons must leave the sports facility immediately (health and safety).
EMERGENCIES AND INJURIES
Refrigerator with ice packs and first-aid supplies
Each first-aid station is equipped with a refrigerator containing ice packs and first-aid supplies.
Any use must be reported immediately to the exercise instructors and via the digital form provided by ZB-SB on the refrigerator.
The ice packs remain the property of the ZB-SB even after use and must be returned.
It is prohibited to use the refrigerator to chill food or beverages.
Emergency
All individuals are required to familiarize themselves with the building’s emergency plans and emergency signage. In the event of an emergency, everyone should evacuate to safety in accordance with the emergency plans or take appropriate (first aid) measures as the situation requires.
SANCTIONS
In the event of violations of these rules of use, the ZB-SB may take the following measures:
1. A warning or exclusion from individual events.
2. Temporary or permanent exclusion from events.
3. Issuance of a ban from the premises.
Regardless of this, the person responsible is liable for any damage caused intentionally or through gross negligence.
Scope: University sports courses and collaborative courses
The statutory mission of the Central Sports and Fitness Unit (ZB-SB) is to promote sports within the university. To this end, university sports courses are held on campus and led by ZB-SB instructors.
In addition, the ZB-SB offers partnership courses. These are courses provided in collaboration with regional sports clubs and commercial sports companies at their facilities and with their instructors. These may be courses open exclusively to members of the university, or courses in which members of the sports organization may also participate (for example, club members or customers).
The terms and conditions of participation apply to University of Siegen University Sports events and to collaborative courses. By reserving a spot in a course, you agree to these terms and conditions.
Disclaimer/Insurance Coverage
In general, participation in sports programs is at your own risk and personal responsibility; that is, in the event of injury or damage, participants must generally ensure they have adequate private accident and liability insurance coverage or are personally liable.
Specifically for students at the University of Siegen, insurance coverage under the statutory accident insurance program is available under certain conditions, which must be assessed on a case-by-case basis. Information regarding the scope and extent of this coverage is provided by the ZB-SB on its website.
The University of Siegen is liable only for damages resulting from injury to life, limb, or health caused by an intentional or negligent breach of duty, as well as for breaches of material contractual obligations (“cardinal obligations”) and, in terms of amount, is limited to the foreseeable damages typical for this type of contract.
In the case of cooperative courses, the cooperating sports organization acts alongside the University of Siegen and is liable in the same manner for damages arising within its sphere of responsibility.
Fitness for Sports
By participating in a sports program, you confirm your own fitness for sports. If you have any doubts regarding your fitness for sports, you may not begin participating in sports until you have obtained a medical certificate confirming your fitness for sports. The instructor should be informed of any sports-related medical conditions or limitations (e.g., asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, heart problems) prior to participating in the activity, to the extent necessary to avoid acute risks during the event. The ZB-SB will only store data to the extent required by law (e.g., accident documentation).
Participation Groups and Participation Fees
Group 1: Students at the University of Siegen, trainees at the University of Siegen
Group 2: Employees of the University of Siegen, alumni of the University of Siegen
Group 3: Guests, auditors, students from other universities
The respective fees are displayed to participants during the booking process. The tiered structure takes into account, among other things, the varying access to public funding. The participation fees are used to help finance university sports on a pro-rata basis.
Booking Sports Cards and Participation Slots
To participate in events, a spot must be booked. This may be subject to a fee determined by the ZB-SB, which is displayed in the booking system prior to completing the paid booking.
The number of spots in an event is limited. The ZB-SB determines the procedure for allocating spots in an event. Eligibility to participate may be restricted to specific participant groups. The number of spots, the allocation procedure, and the eligible participant groups are displayed in the booking system.
For certain events, booking a spot may require that the Sports Card be purchased before or at the time of booking. The Sports Card remains valid for the entire semester. The fee for the Sports Card is displayed in the booking system before the paid booking is made. The sports pass does not entitle the holder to a spot in a specific class.
Participation spots may not be reserved (non-attendance despite registration): If you are unable to attend an event for which there are no additional costs, you must cancel the reservation yourself via the booking system to free up the spot.
Payment of Fees
Payment of fees can only be made after registration via the booking system and by direct debit. A direct debit authorization must be provided for this purpose. Should any costs arise from returned direct debits, these must be paid in addition to the fees.
Confirmation and Verification of the Booking
After booking, a digital confirmation of the booking will be issued. Confirmations are valid only for the person named in the confirmation and are non-transferable.
The confirmation for the relevant sports activity must be presented to the instructor or a person authorized by ZB-SB at the event, e.g., on a smartphone used to complete a digital check-in.
Exclusion from Participation
Participants who cause a serious disruption to an event may be immediately excluded from the event by the instructor and must leave the sports facility without delay.
Furthermore, the ZB-SB may, following a prior hearing, exclude individuals from participation temporarily or permanently if a valid reason is established. Valid reasons may include, in particular:
- Failure to pay dues (e.g., causing returned direct debits)
- Lack of fitness for sports
- Repeatedly reserving spots without attending (failure to participate despite registration)
- Fraud or attempted fraud during the booking process (e.g., providing false information or using other people’s participation confirmations)
- Disruption of the event, for example, by failing to follow the instructors’ instructions
- Theft
- Complaints from the ZB-SB’s partner regarding the behavior of the person in question
- Violation of the ZB-SB’s terms of use, such as unauthorized use of sports equipment or facilities
- Violation of the University of Siegen’s house rules, such as property damage, vandalism, littering, or conducting unauthorized advertising activities
- Violation of the University of Siegen’s guidelines for respectful conduct, such as discrimination, bullying, stalking, or sexual harassment
- Breaches of order pursuant to Section 51a(1) of the Higher Education Act (HG), such as the use of violence or the violation of the dignity of other members of the university community through intimidation, hostility, or insults
- Social behavior that runs counter to the values of the University of Siegen, such as supporting anti-democratic or racist initiatives
Participants who feel they have been treated unfairly as a result of their exclusion may contact the ZB-SB administration. If the matter cannot be resolved through this channel, the University’s central complaints office is also available.
Information on Data Protection
1. Collection of Personal Data
Below, we provide information about the collection of personal data when you use our services. Personal data includes any data that can be directly or indirectly linked to you personally, such as your name, address, email addresses, and usage patterns. We process your data in accordance with Article 6(1)(b) of the GDPR. This means that we collect, store, and process the personal data you enter in the contact form and that is recorded for course documentation purposes only to the extent necessary to fulfill the contract. We store your data to process future bookings. You agree that, in the event of an accident, your health-related data may also be documented by other persons and archived by the ZB-SB in accordance with § 24(6) of the DGUV and Article 9(2)(a) of the GDPR. Any further processing of your personal data beyond the specified purposes is not permitted and requires a separate declaration of consent from you. Further information on data protection can be found on the University of Siegen’s website.
2. Use of Images
In accordance with Section 22, Sentence 1 of the German Art Copyright Act (KunstUrhG) and Article 6(1)(a), you consent to the use by the University of Siegen of photographs and video recordings of you created in connection with the events and commissioned by the ZB-SB, may be used by the University of Siegen, together with your name, as part of a global cross-media advertising campaign. You consent to the University of Siegen publishing the aforementioned images and videos in the following manner: on public websites, on social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube), and in printed materials created for promotional purposes. You are aware that if the aforementioned data is published on the Internet, it may be accessed worldwide. You consent to any associated transfer to third countries in accordance with Art. 49(1)(a) of the GDPR.
Refunds and Waivers of Fees
1. Cancellation of a Reservation
You may cancel a paid booking without providing a reason within 14 days of receiving the booking confirmation via email. In the event of cancellation, both parties are obligated to refund any payments already received. If the payments cannot be refunded, or can only be partially refunded, compensation for the value must be provided.
For the Sports Pass, this means that a refund or waiver of the fee is excluded if, after booking the Sports Pass, at least one university sports event has taken place and the Sports Pass in question entitled the holder to book a spot. It is irrelevant whether a spot was actually booked or whether the student actually participated in an event.
For cooperative courses, this means that the ZB-SB has already fulfilled its obligation to facilitate the booking. The placement fee agreed upon with the cooperative partner can therefore no longer be refunded or waived (as of the Winter Semester 2025/26: 20 euros). The ZB-SB will determine, in consultation with the relevant partner institution and based on legal provisions, to what extent the fee may be further refunded or waived.
2. Changes to the Program
The ZB-SB may change the event offerings at any time without providing a reason. As long as the nature and scope of the original offering remain unchanged, there is no entitlement to a refund or waiver of fees. Fees for the Sports Card are excluded from refunds or waivers due to a change in the event offerings.
3. Cancellation of an Event
If, first, an event is canceled in whole or in part, and second, an event-related fee was paid for that event, a refund or waiver of fees may be requested informally from ZB-SB up to four weeks after the last scheduled date of the event or after the cancellation of the entire event becomes known. The amount of the refund is determined by the proportion of services not provided relative to the original total offering. Fees for the Sports Pass will only be refunded or waived if the Sports Pass was a prerequisite for participation in the event in question and, due to the cancellation, no sports activities were available at all after the Sports Pass was booked.
4. Personal Reasons
Refunds or waivers of fees based on personal reasons are not possible (e.g., illness, injury, relocation, lack of time). Furthermore, exclusion from participation does not entitle the participant to a refund or waiver of fees.
The cancellation or request for a refund or waiver must be sent to: info@sport.uni-siegen.de

For University Sports courses, you must first purchase the Sports Pass. It serves as a flat rate: With the Sports Pass, you can book any University Sports course at no additional cost. Registration for University Sports courses takes place on a weekly basis. This means you can always book your sports sessions one week in advance.

A participation fee is due at the time of booking. You do not need the Sports Card to book partner courses.
Booking generally begins at the start of the lecture period. Please check the announcements on our website.
Partnerships require shared interests. The partnering sports organizations focus on students, trainees, alumni, and staff members of the University of Siegen, to whom a special sports program is intended. All other groups of people generally have the option of obtaining a regular membership with the partner sports organizations. To do so, please contact the respective sports organization directly.
The Sports Card gives you access to university sports courses. It’s a flat-rate pass: With the Sports Card, you can sign up for any university sports course at no additional cost.
No Sports Card is required to participate in partner courses.
No, the Sports Card is only required for university sports courses. Partnership courses are booked directly.
We offer the Sports Card at an Early Bird rate only at the start of the semester. We’d love to see as many students, trainees, alumni, and University of Siegen staff members as possible sign up early for an active semester!
Note: The Early Bird Sports Card is not available at the start of the lecture-free period. This offer is only available at the start of the semester.
Alumni include all individuals who are currently studying or have studied at the University of Siegen, who are currently conducting research or teaching or have done so in the past, and who are currently working or have worked at the university. You can register for the alumni network here. After registering in the alumni network and receiving your AlumniCard, you can sign up for the alumni sports pass. You’ll be asked for your alumni membership number. Since there is no alumni membership number, simply enter in this required field what connects you to the university, for example: “former student,” “former employee.” When attending sports classes, you must have proof of registration with the alumni network on hand.
University Sports is a service provided by the university and is therefore primarily intended for students, trainees, alumni, and staff members of the University of Siegen. For this reason, these individuals are given priority.
Yes, the sports pass is valid for the entire semester, including the break between semesters.
Payment of the participation fee can only be made after registration via the booking system and by direct debit. To do this, you must set up a direct debit authorization in the booking system.
If you have booked a sports pass, it will be revoked. You can purchase a new sports pass. If the debit attempt fails again, your sports pass will be revoked once more, and you will receive a message from the ZB-SB stating that you are temporarily suspended from university sports, meaning you will no longer be able to purchase a sports pass. In this case, please contact the ZB-SB in person so that we can work together to find a solution.
If you have registered for a partner course, we will contact you so that we can find a solution together. If the situation cannot be resolved immediately, your eligibility to participate in the registered course will be revoked. Nevertheless, you must pay for all services you have already used. This includes, in any case, the administrative fee of 20 euros. In addition, you are responsible for any costs incurred due to returned direct debits.
Participation fees are used to finance university sports. In the spirit of a community based on solidarity and in light of varying income levels, the fees for staff members and alumni are slightly higher than those for students and trainees.
Guests, auditors, and students from other universities must pay a fee based on market rates. They are not permitted to benefit from public subsidies for university sports. This is stipulated in the EU State Aid Framework.

In the event of an accident, you must inform the instructor in charge. Together, you must fill out this online form to document the first aid provided. This is required by law (§ 24 (6) DGUV).
Furthermore, to claim insurance benefits, it is recommended that you report the accident to the Student Affairs Office. To do so, please complete these two documents and submit them in digital form via email to the appropriate department at the Student Affairs Office:
If you have any questions, please contact the Student Office or the University’s Occupational Safety and Health Department.
In general, participation in sports programs is at your own risk and personal responsibility; that is, in the event of an injury or accident, participants must generally ensure they have adequate private accident and liability insurance coverage or are personally liable.
Specifically for enrolled students at the University of Siegen, insurance coverage is available under certain conditions through the statutory accident insurance program. In particular, it must be determined on a case-by-case basis whether the specific sports activity serves a health-promoting purpose or contributes to the social integration of students. Binding information regarding the scope and coverage of accident insurance is available directly from the Unfallkasse NRW: https://www.unfallkasse-nrw.de/service/haeufige-fragen/studierende.html
The University of Siegen is liable only for damages resulting from injury to life, limb, or health arising from an intentional or negligent breach of duty, as well as for breaches of material contractual obligations (“cardinal obligations”) and, in terms of amount, is limited to the foreseeable damages typical for this type of contract.
For cooperative courses, the cooperating sports organization acts alongside the University of Siegen and is liable in the same manner for damages arising within its sphere of responsibility.
The University of Siegen does not explicitly promote competitive or elite sports. There is no scouting or promotion of athletic talent.
Nevertheless, there may be university sports courses that are designed as competitive courses and include a corresponding training program. These sports courses sometimes also participate in regional tournaments.
Of course, if you’re interested, we’d be happy to register you for the university championships. You can find the current eligibility requirements and dates here on the adh website.
Please note that registration requires advance notice, so you must contact us in a timely manner at info@sport.uni-siegen.de. Please also note that University Sports or the ZB-SB does not cover any costs, including the entry fee.
Yes, there is a gym in Building AR-S. If you’d like to work out there, sign up for the sports pass and a corresponding course through University Sports. For independent training, speak with your University Sports instructor and make arrangements with them to meet at the gym. It is not possible to work out in the gym without an instructor. The gym also does not have set hours for independent workouts. University of Siegen staff may have the option to work out in the gym as part of the employee sports program (see the employee sports courses offered).
No, that is not possible. Due to various safety regulations, allowing third parties to use the sports facilities involves a significant amount of bureaucratic effort. We regret this and ask for your understanding that the ZB-SB lacks the resources to accommodate such a request.
No, open gym times are not available for individual use. If you’d like to do more sports and take advantage of open gym times, you’re welcome to apply to become an instructor with University Sports. How does that work? See: How can I offer a course through University Sports?
No, borrowing sports equipment is not permitted. Even instructors are not authorized to borrow sports equipment from the university themselves or to lend it to participants.
The University of Siegen’s teaching pool on the Adolf-Reichwein-Straße campus was taken out of service in spring 2022. Significant investments would be required for its renovation and continued operation. In light of the need to reduce energy costs, the university administration has decided to discontinue operation of the teaching pool. For this reason, there will be no university sports courses involving water activities for the time being.
If you’d like to offer a university sports course, please contact the ZB-SB at info@sport.uni-siegen.de
Please note that to lead a sports program, you need a first-aid certificate that is no more than two years old. The first aid training course must be conducted in accordance with the “Joint Principles for First Aid Training and Continuing Education” of the Federal First Aid Working Group. Therefore, only courses offered by the following aid organizations are eligible: Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund Deutschland e.V. (ASB), Deutsche Lebens-Rettungs-Gesellschaft e.V. (DLRG), Deutsches Rotes Kreuz e.V. (DRK), Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe e.V. (JUH), Malteser Hilfsdienst e.V. (MHD).
Please also note that you need a valid sports license to lead a sports program. The training program must consist of at least 90 hours and correspond to at least Level 4 of the German Qualifications Framework (e.g., DOSB C License). Preferably, this should be a specialized license for the relevant sport, but a multi-sport license is also sufficient. Only sports programs with an extremely low risk potential may, in exceptional cases, be led without a license. A license is required for fitness and health courses, for courses with artistic elements, and for sports games of all sizes.
Collaborative courses are courses offered by the University of Siegen in partnership with regional sports clubs and commercial sports organizations. These courses generally take place at the sports organization’s facilities under the guidance of its instructors.
The sports organization partnering with the university provides the sports facility, including the necessary sports equipment, as well as the instructors to run the program. The sports organization ensures compliance with legal safety requirements. These include, in particular, the safety of the sports facility and the sports equipment, the organization of effective first aid, and the qualifications of the instructors.
Further information on cooperative courses is available upon request at info@sport.uni-siegen.de.
The University Sports team can be reached at the email address info@sport.uni-siegen.de
People with a current first aid certificate may be given priority by instructors when assigning course spots. To qualify, you’ll need a valid first aid certificate (no older than two years) obtained from an organization listed here: https://www.bg-qseh.de/. Just let your course instructor know.
University sports are easily accessible and offer many options. They are designed to be as barrier-free as possible. Should barriers nevertheless arise, we will immediately work to find suitable solutions. We welcome reports of existing barriers: info@sport.uni-siegen.de
All course descriptions are available in German and English. No university sports course excludes participants based on gender, age, ethnicity, religion, background, or sexual orientation. Physical fitness level (for advanced courses) is only a consideration if there is also a course in the same sport open to all skill levels. All University Sports texts are written in a gender-neutral manner.
The ZB-SB advocates for the establishment of unisex changing rooms and unisex restrooms. However, the Workplace Regulations (ASR A4.1) stipulate: “Separate restroom facilities must be provided for female and male employees.” Therefore, establishing unisex locker rooms to comply with the requirements of the General Equal Treatment Act is unfortunately not readily possible.

As of October 2025
General Information
Scope of Responsibility
The exercise leader is responsible for the safety of participants and for preventing damage to materials, equipment, and buildings.
§ 2 (1) and (2) DGUV 100-001
In accordance with § 2 (1) DGUV, the exercise supervisor must take the necessary measures to prevent accidents and health hazards and to ensure effective first aid. In doing so, the exercise leader must, in accordance with § 2 (2) DGUV, adhere to the general principles set forth in § 4 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act.
Specifically, this means, in particular, avoiding hazards of any kind as much as possible, shielding sources of danger to the best of their ability, and providing participants with appropriate instructions.
The exact wording can be found here: https://publikationen.dguv.de/widgets/pdf/download/article/2909
Section 6 of DGUV 100-001
Instructors must cooperate with regard to safety and health protection. In particular, mutual hazards must be avoided. If multiple instructors are present at the same time, they must designate one person from among themselves to coordinate the activities. The instructions of this person must be followed.
Sources of Hazard and Precautions
In addition to the athletic activities themselves, hazards arise from the operation or modification of permanently installed equipment and from the equipment storage area in the garages. Hazards arise in particular when participants are unsupervised.
As a general rule, therefore, all participants must be continuously supervised by the exercise leaders and receive instruction. Additional measures are explained below.
Rules of Use
In general, the guidelines set forth in the Rules of Use, as published on the ZB-SB website, apply. The following instructions are to be understood as a supplement to those guidelines.
Instructor Manual
Important information regarding the conduct of university sports courses can be found in the Instructor Manual. Instructors will receive this manual via email.
Safety Directive
When conducting sports activities, the guidelines set forth in the so-called NRW Safety Directive must always be observed:

Access
Finding Your Way Around the Building
The rear entrance to the gym is located directly at the top of the concrete staircase that leads upward next to the bus stop. Only the exercise instructors should enter the building through this rear entrance.
The rear entrance leads into a long hallway, where the changing rooms (women’s/men’s) and a passageway to the sports hall are located. For one of the changing rooms, the class instructors may decide on a case-by-case basis whether it is open to women or men. At the end of the long hallway, a staircase leads upstairs to the main entrance of the sports facility.
The main entrance door is operated by a switch. When the green light at the top of the concrete post is on, the door can be opened from the outside, allowing participants to enter the building. If the light is off, the door is locked again.
Behind the main entrance, a staircase leads upstairs to the gym and the bleachers. Only the exercise instructors are allowed to enter the bleachers to retrieve sports equipment. Because it is rarely cleaned, the bleachers area is very slippery.
At the very back of the hallway leading to the gym is the ZB-SB storage room, which only the class instructors are permitted to enter. Furthermore, this hallway contains restrooms (women’s/men’s), a first-aid room, an (unused) storage room, and two entrances—each with a double door—leading into the gym.
Next to these double doors are the light switches for the gym. The gym has no windows; ventilation is automated via a ventilation system.
Admitting participants to the gym
Only the exercise instructor grants access to the sports facility. The chip key must never be given to third parties.
There may be instances where the chip does not open the door to the gym. In that case, the chip must be activated. To do so, simply hold it against the contact point at the rear entrance.
Only individuals authorized for the specific class may be present in the gym. Participants may only enter the gym when their instructor is present.
Participants from other sports classes should not be allowed into the sports hall. These individuals can wait in the connecting hallway, for example.
Use of Permanently Installed Equipment
Policy
All permanently installed sports equipment may be operated or adjusted exclusively by the instructor or in consultation with the instructor. Sports activities must be suspended during operation or adjustment. Anyone operating an electronic device must keep a constant eye on its operation.
Turn off electrical devices after use and disconnect them from the power source if possible. Never pull the power cord out of the outlet by the cable; always hold the plug itself. Defective electrical devices must not be repaired or used. Defective devices must be clearly marked “Defective” by the class instructors.
Sound System
The sound system is located at Gate 4. It is connected via a Bluetooth adapter. Operating instructions are posted. Turn off the system after use.
Basketball Hoops
The basketball hoops can be operated at Gates 1 and 8. There are buttons there to lower and raise the hoop.
The emergency button should only be used in an emergency. A key on a chain is provided to unlock the emergency button.
Goals
Goals may only be used when securely bolted in place. Unbolted goals must be placed with the open side against the wall to prevent them from tipping over.
Partition Curtain
The partition curtains are operated from the first-aid room or the storage room. Next to each window is a key on a chain that can be used to activate the raising and lowering mechanisms.
Electric Ball Pump
The electric ball pump is located in the first-aid room.
Prohibited Equipment
The first-aid room contains technical equipment (including the ventilation system) that must not be operated under any circumstances.
Gate 1 contains a projector with a projection screen as well as a lifting platform. None of these may be used.
Equipment Management
Policy
Participants may only remove materials and equipment from the garages after consulting with the drill leaders.
Damaged equipment must not be used further. Such equipment must be marked “Defective” by the exercise instructors and—if possible—placed in the ZB-SB storage room.
Garage doors must be kept closed during sports activities.
Equipment Overview
Door 2: small boxes, benches, whiteboard
Door 3: Table tennis tables and nets
Gate 4: Net posts for badminton and volleyball, slalom poles, hockey boards, hurdles, small gymnastics mats
Gate 5: Balls, ball carts, volleyball nets, gymnastics hoops, marking shirts, table tennis, juggling, floorball, badminton, Indiaka, Spikeball, marking equipment, and small equipment
Gate 6: Gymnastics apparatus, exercise balls
Gate 7: Gymnastics mats, steppers, barbells & weights, medicine balls, balance beams, yoga equipment, Pilates rollers, spiky balls
Gate 8: Judo mats
Marking shirts
Used shirts are placed in the laundry basket located under the rack with the clean shirts. Our assistant coordinates the laundry service.
Washing machine
The washing machine is located in the ZB-SB storage room. Instructions are posted right next to the washing machine.
Misuse of Equipment
If equipment is used for purposes other than those intended, safety must be ensured. In general, instructors must not exceed the scope of their contractually agreed-upon authority when conducting sports activities.
It is prohibited to use mat and ball carts or boards as obstacles, play equipment, or field boundaries during sports activities.
Safety
Individuals with a First Aid Certificate
Instructors may supervise up to 19 people. If they allow more people into the gym, a total of 10% of those present must have a current first-aid certification.
Escape Routes and Assembly Point
If the sports hall must be evacuated, this is done through the emergency exit next to Gate 8.
After leaving the building, the sports group must assemble at the assembly point next to the parking garage. The instructor will verify that everyone is present. Any missing persons must be reported to the evacuation assistants or the fire department.
Maps showing the escape routes and the assembly point are posted at the building’s entrances.
Fire Safety
The self-closing entrance doors to the gym are fire doors and must therefore never be wedged open.
Escape routes and emergency doors must remain clear at all times. It is prohibited to place gym bags, boxes, or benches in the passageways near the doors.
Emergency Call and Emergency Information Board
The emergency number at the university is: 0271 / 740 – 2111. It is recommended that you save this number in your smartphone.
Calling this number connects you to the Central Control Center (ZLT), which will then notify the on-site emergency services and open all barriers on the access routes.
The emergency information board, containing this and other information, is posted in the first-aid room. There is also a telephone there.
First Aid
In the first-aid room, next to the emergency phone, you’ll find first-aid supplies as well as a refrigerator with ice packs.
There is also a stretcher, walking aids, and high-visibility vests for people directing the ambulance.
The first-aid room must always be open so that participants also have access to the first-aid supplies and the emergency phone.
Every use must be reported to the exercise leaders and digitally reported to the ZB-SB using the form attached to the refrigerator.
Defibrillators
The nearest defibrillators are located in buildings AR-NA and AR-HB. In building AR-NA, the defibrillator is across from the main entrance; in building AR-HB, it is on the left wall next to the main entrance.
Medical Treatment
Medical treatment following workplace accidents may only be provided by hospitals or so-called “D-doctors” (D-Arzt). A current list of D-doctors is available from the Occupational Safety Office at the University of Siegen. The nearest hospital: Klinikum Siegen, Weidenauer Straße 76, 57076 Siegen (approx. 10-minute drive).
Lost and Found
Lost and found items should be placed in the box in the ZB-SB storage room. The item found must be noted on the list provided there.
Lost and found items may be returned provided that ownership is plausible and undisputed. The return must also be noted on the list.
Unclaimed lost and found items are regularly turned over by the ZB-SB to the university’s lost and found office.
Studio/Common Room
Instructors who wish to use the lounge or the fitness studio with their groups must complete additional training.

Weather Information
As of June 21, 2026
The heat warning system provides an objective criterion that indicates health risks more accurately than temperature forecasts alone. Even at Level 1, exercise is considered very dangerous. If a heat warning is “likely” to occur, it can be assumed that a heat warning will be issued for that day.
Rules for Using Sports Facilities:
If the ambient temperature on the sports field exceeds 26 °C, the instructors must inform participants of the increased health risks. Sports activities are prohibited when the ambient temperature reaches 30 °C or higher. All individuals must leave the sports facility immediately (for health and safety reasons).
Consequences for University Sports
- Instructors will not receive compensation
- Partner courses decide for themselves based on the climatic conditions at their sports facilities
Consequences for certificate programs (academic regulations)
- If a performance is prevented by heat, it is considered “not completed for good cause.” The performance is neither “passed” nor “failed”
