Introducing the Department of Transformation and Design
itecture is always building and designing in an existing context. Not only do the places where we build already provide a context, but the design and our thinking are also based, converging, diverging or transforming, on thoughts that others have thought before us.
When transforming existing buildings, designers constantly encounter resistance from what already exists. The non-resolution of these resistances that emerge in the process of conversion enriches the experience and expression of the buildings. The fragmentarily conceived house is not homogeneous, not static and never finished. Change is inscribed in it and the appropriation and renewed transformation by later generations is already conceptually laid out and legible. Houses that are thought through rather than transformed are sustainable per se.
