Your path to a Master's thesis

Prerequisite fulfilled - topic and supervisor determined
Once you have selected your topic and supervisor, please submit the application form to the Examination Office. After approval, you will receive official admission and the processing period for your thesis will begin.

Everything important at a glance

The application for admission to the Master's thesis must be submitted to the Examination Board via the Examination Office at
. The application must be submitted and approved before the start of the thesis. Admission to the
Master's thesis is governed by § 13 RPO-M. The prerequisite for admission to the Master's thesis is
the prior acquisition of at least 60 credit points for completed modules
(FPO-M 2022). As soon as this admission requirement has been met, the Master's thesis can be registered at any time
.
Admission to the Master's thesis is announced in writing or electronically via
the campus management system unisono.

You are free to choose your supervisor from the group of authorized examiners*.
An examiner is not obliged to examine you. You yourself should propose the first examiner and
(if necessary in consultation with the first examiner) the second examiner
(right of proposal, but no legal claim to fulfillment). The proposals must be submitted together
with the registration of the M.A. thesis at the examination office.

The Master's thesis should demonstrate that the candidate is able to work independently on a topic using scientific methods within a specified time
and present the results
in an appropriate manner.
- The Master's thesis accounts for 30 credit points of the Master's degree program
- The completion time is 6 months
- Assessment: 75% Master's thesis, 25% colloquium (30 min. or 60 min. BMT)
- Maximum length 100 pages or 120 MDS (without lists and appendices)
- German or English language (English) in agreement with the supervisor
- Title page (template see download/forms), table of contents, list of sources and
bibliography
- Signed and dated assurance/declaration (firmly bound) that the thesis
was prepared independently and without aids (template declaration of independence
see download/forms)
- Two printed copies and one electronic form

Application for the thesis
At any time, provided the requirements (at least 60 LP) are met!
The application can be downloaded from the homepage under Downloads and Forms
. Please submit the completed and signed application as
scan by e-mail to the Examination Office.
Start of processing
After approval of the application!
Processing time
6 months (if the deadline falls on the weekend or a public holiday, the next
working day is considered the deadline.
Submission
The printed Master's thesis must be submitted to the
Examination Office in the specified form and number by the deadline. If the thesis is delivered by post, the time of
delivery to the post office (postmark) is decisive. If the thesis is not submitted to
by the deadline, it will be graded as unsatisfactory.
Submission date=examination date
Please send your thesis in digital form (PDF) to the Examinations Office by the
submission deadline at the latest. If you provide further data outside of the thesis
, please submit a data carrier with it.

Authorized to examine
First and second supervisors must be authorized to examine within the meaning of § 9 RPO-M. The
second supervisor does not have to be a member of the University of Siegen,
provided that he or she has a significant professional proximity to the topic to be dealt with in the Master's thesis
.
Changing the topic
The topic of the Master's thesis can only be returned once and only within the first four weeks

Illness
In the event of illness, a medical certificate must be submitted to the Examinations Office
within three days. The processing time for the Master's thesis will be extended by this time.
Inspection of the reports
After the result has been communicated, the inspection of the reports can be requested at the
Examination Office.
Poor performance
In the event of poor performance, the Master's thesis can be repeated once

Withdrawal

You can withdraw from the Bachelor's thesis at the Examinations Office up to 1 week before the start of writing without giving reasons.

You can also withdraw from the Bachelor's thesis during the writing period for valid reasons. The written request must be submitted to the Examinations Office at least 7 days before the deadline. If the examination board recognizes these reasons, the Bachelor's thesis is deemed not to have been undertaken.

The Master's thesis in the Biomedical Technology and Medical Data Science degree program must be defended in a colloquium (BMT 60 min, MDS 30 min presentation) and is included in the grade (BMT 25%, MDS 15%). Please make an appointment with your supervisor and the second assessor and submit the application to the Examinations Office in good time.
