eduroam - WLAN - WiFi
eduroam provides students and staff with secure Wi-Fi access at the University of Siegen as well as at many institutions worldwide.
You can log in using your ZIMT account credentials, and the service works across all locations without the need for re-registration.
Instructions
How to set up eduroam on your devices and troubleshoot common issues.
Download
Download the geteduroam app for Windows at geteduroam.app.
Select the app for Windows. After the download is complete, you'll find the app in your Downloads folder.
Setup
Run the file to begin setup, and select the University of Siegen in the app. If it does not appear automatically, you can find it using the search function.
In the next step, enter your username + @uni-siegen.de (e.g., g123456@uni-siegen.de) and your password. Confirm by clicking“Connect.”
The setup is complete. You can close the window and check your Wi-Fi settings to see if your device is connected to eduroam.
Download
To connect your macOS device to eduroam, please first download the eduroamCAT tool:
Once you’re on the page, click the blue button:
Next, a menu will open where you must select the University of Siegen.
If the University of Siegen isn’t found automatically, you can use the search field at the bottom to find it.
You will now be taken to the page where you can start the download. The correct program will be suggested to you automatically.
Click the blue button.
You will then be taken to a page where the download starts automatically. This may take a few seconds.
If this does not happen, you can also start the download manually. A message will appear on the webpage; follow the instructions provided there.
In some cases (often during initial setup), you may need to authorize the download first. A dialog box will open; you’ll need to click“Allow” to continue the download.
Setup
Now open your System Preferences and select the“Profiles” option.
Select the eduroam profile from the menu on the left. To establish a connection, click“Install.”
In the window that opens, enter your username +@uni-siegen.de (e.g. , g123456@uni-siegen.de) and your password. Confirm by clicking“Install.”
Your device will now ask for your device password (the password you use to unlock your device).
Once you’ve entered your device password, the process is complete. You now have a secure connection to the eduroam network.

Search for the "geteduroam" app in the Apple App Store or download it here.
When installing the app for the first time, you may need to allow the download before you can continue.
Then open the geteduroam app to begin setup.
The app will now guide you through the setup process.
First, use the search field to find and select the University of Siegen.
In the next step, the app will prompt you to enter your username and password.
Please note that you must enter your username followed by @uni-siegen.de (e.g., g123456@uni-siegen.de).
After you’ve entered your information and confirmed by tapping“Connect to Network,” your device will need permission to connect to the network. So tap“Allow” andthen “Connect” in the next pop-up.
Your connection is now configured and ready to use.

Open the following page in a browser of your choice (e.g., Firefox): https://cat.eduroam.org.
Once you’re on the page, click the blue button:

You will now be taken to the page where you can start the download. The correct program will be suggested to you automatically.

The downloaded file is now in your Downloads folder. You’ll find it under the name:
eduroam-linux-Universitat_Siegen-eduroam.py.
Grant Permissions
Now open your terminal and enter the following command to navigate to your Downloads folder:
cd Downloads/
To view the files in the directory, enter this command:
ls -l
Now locate the downloaded file. You should find it named eduroam-linux-Universitat_Siegen-eduroam.py. It should have the following permissions:
-rw-rw-r–
This means you do not yet have the permissions to run the file. To change this, enter the following command in your terminal:
chmod +x eduroam-linux-Universitat_Siegen-eduroam.py
This command adds the missing "x" permission. To verify this, enter the command `ls -l ` again. The file should now have the following abbreviation at the beginning:
rwx-rwxr-x.
Execution and Installation
Important: Do not run the file as sudo!
Now enter the following command:
python3 eduroam-linux-Universitat_Siegen-eduroam.py
A pop-up window will then open. Confirm it by clicking OK.
Confirm the next window by clicking " Yes."
In the next window, you can now enter your username +@uni-siegen.de (e.g., g123456@uni-siegen.de) and confirm by clicking "OK."
Now enter your password and confirm by clicking OK.
After successfully entering the correct information, the following window will appear:
Eduroam will now connect automatically.

Open the following page in a browser of your choice (e.g., Chrome): https://cat.eduroam.org.
Once you’re on the page, click the blue button:
Next, a menu will open where you must select the University of Siegen. If the University of Siegen isn’t found automatically, you can use the search field at the bottom to find it.
You will now be taken to the page where you can start the download. The correct program will be suggested to you automatically.
Click the blue button.
Click the blue button. A small dialog box will appear; you must click“OK” to confirm and start the download.
Next, you’ll be taken to a page where the download starts automatically. This may take a few seconds. If it doesn’t, you can also start the download manually. To do this, follow the instructions in the text that appears on the download page.
Import and Setup
Now enter the following path in your browser: chrome://network#general
You’ll now be taken to a page where you can import the downloaded file.
Under“Choose File,” you can select the downloaded file and import it.
The profile has now been imported, and you can begin the setup process.
Now you can select the eduroam profile in the Wi-Fi menu and enter your information manually. To do this, click on the profile and then on“Connect.” You will then be prompted to enter your username and password.
Please note that the username must be followed by @uni-siegen.de (e.g., g123456@uni-siegen.de).
After entering the correct information, confirm by clicking“Connect.” Your eduroam access is now set up.
FAQ
If you have previously connected to eduroam and the connection no longer works, you will need to remove the eduroam profile or the connection to eduroam from your device.
On Windows devices, you can remove the connection by opening your Wi-Fi connections from the taskbar and selecting“eduroam.” Right-click the eduroam connection and select“Forget” from the drop-down menu.
On macOS and iOS devices, remove the connection by opening it in your Wi-Fi settings (by tapping the info button) and then selecting “Ignore this network.”
On Android devices, remove the eduroam connection by selecting the connection in your Wi-Fi settings and then tapping “Remove network.”
On ChromeOS devices, remove the connection via the Wi-Fi settings by selecting the connection under "Known Networks" and then removing it.
In some cases, problems may arise during setup if the time zone and time are not set correctly on the device. The correct time zone in Germany is generally: UTC+01:00 Amsterdam, Berlin, Bern, ...
Therefore, make sure that your time zone and time are set correctly. This process varies depending on the device.
Windows users can adjust this setting in System Settings under "Date and Time."
macOS and iOS users can do this via System Preferences under “General” > “Date & Time.”
On Android devices, you'll usually find this setting under "More Settings."
If you have disabled location services in the security settings, eduroam may be unable to establish a connection on Windows 11 devices even if the credentials have been entered correctly. In this case, the following error code will be displayed:
To resolve this issue, Location Services must be enabled, at least during the eduroam setup process. To do this, open your Settings and then select the "Privacy & Security" menu item.
Now open the“Location” option. You must enable both Location Services and app access. To do this, slide the toggle next to the“Location Services” and“Allow apps to access your location” options.
Once this setting has been configured, you can now tap“Connect” again in the app. Eduroam should now connect.
