Bianca Schaalburg, born in Berlin, has been an illustrator since completing her studies in visual communication at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK). Her autobiographical graphic novel debut, *Der Duft der Kiefern* (avant-verlag,

2021), was awarded the German Youth Literature Prize in the nonfiction category in 2022. For the anthology *Gerne würdest du allen so viel sagen* (avant-verlag, 2023), she illustrated the story of her sons’ French grandmother, who experienced the German occupation as a child.

As an artist-in-residence, Bianca spent five months in Paris.

Her new graphic novel *Emma and Amir* (lacoby & Stuart, 2025) was created there and in Berlin.
