Our research profile

In its research, the Building Construction, Timber Engineering and Building Physics working group at the University of Siegen focuses on the development of concepts and solutions to improve the energy quality of buildings. The building envelope and its individual components are at the forefront of the investigations. The aim is to develop energy-optimized building constructions for new and existing buildings.

Equipment

The Building Construction, Timber Engineering and Building Physics working group at the University of Siegen is staffed with a W2/(currently C2) professorship. The staff also includes a full-time position for a research assistant. There is no secretariat or technical-administrative staff.

The working group is equipped with two thermal imaging cameras, a blower door for testing the airtightness of the building envelope and various measuring devices for determining temperature and humidity. The working group also has suitable software and various programs for calculating thermal bridges and for the energy balancing of buildings.

R&D projects

In research, the Building Construction, Timber Engineering and Building Physics working group at the University of Siegen focuses on the development of concepts and solutions to improve the energy quality of buildings. The building envelope and its individual components are at the forefront of the investigations. The aim is to develop energy-optimized building constructions for new and existing buildings.

Specifically, the working group works together with regional manufacturers of timber houses (timber panel construction) and develops solutions for energy-optimized component structures, whereby thermal bridges and their minimization play a decisive role and are being investigated. In recent years, several degree theses and dissertations have been written in this field in collaboration with timber house manufacturers.

Another focus of research and project work is the development of calculation methods and models for the energy balancing of buildings based on existing standards, such as DIN V 18599.

The working group also cooperates with several manufacturers of windows and window glass. There have been close contacts with companies in the region for many years. The research activities here extend to the development of thermally optimized plastic window profiles. Other services include advisory activities and further training courses for window and window glass manufacturers.
