Alumni portrait: Jessica Schmitt

Hello, why am I on the news page?

Field report from a social education worker

According to the Federal Statistical Office, 24% of children and young people in Germany are at risk of poverty or social exclusion. No one knows better than Jessica Schmitt that these children and young people not only need a lot of support but also a lot of care. The social education worker has been supporting young people in vocational training since March 2023. She still has no regrets about her career decision.

From a small village in Rhineland-Palatinate, the then 19-year-old Jessica Schmitt moved to a small town called Siegen to study. Another reason for this was the lack of infrastructure in her village. She remembers: "The youth club was the only place where we met up with friends". The fun-based meetings quickly developed into a lifelong ministry. At the time, the social worker helped run a children's group on request and was thrilled. It was the birth of her vocation. From that moment on, it was clear to her: she wanted to work in education....
