Current status of the "Hettlage" project
The former "Haus Hettlage" is to become the new university library of the University of Siegen in the city center. The project is developing in line with the specified planning steps. The University is in close coordination with the ministries involved, the Ministry of Culture and Science (MKW) and the Ministry of Home Affairs, Municipal Affairs, Building and Digitization (MHKBD) of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the University of Siegen.
In 2025 and 2026, several planning steps were successfully completed and the University of Siegen submitted the building application to the City of Siegen in 2026. Together with all implementation partners, the university is aiming for the first construction measures in the course of 2027. The university is in constructive discussions with the tenants.
In terms of sustainability, the university is keen to make the best possible use of the building's substance. According to the plan, part of the building on Kölner Straße will therefore be retained and converted. The other part, on Friedrichstrasse, is to be replaced. The aim is to create a sustainable building with a high level of user satisfaction during construction and operation.
Following the 2023 competition and the award of the winning design, the plans for the interior concept and exterior design have been further developed. For the façade, a sustainable design with slurry-coated "re-use bricks" is now planned. In the interior, concepts for the use of all floors have been developed. An open area is to be created in the area of the main entrance on Kölner Straße, while the standard floors (Friedrichstraße) are to have user spaces, open shelving, wall shelving areas and a compact control system.
The university and the city are in close and regular contact in order to reduce the impact of a construction site in the city center as much as possible. Residents and neighbors will be informed at an early stage and a construction site office will be set up as a contact point.
