Overview of Service Disruptions and Alternate Routes for Train Service to Siegen

In the coming months, Deutsche Bahn will be carrying out extensive modernization and renovation work on rail lines in North Rhine-Westphalia. This will result in significant service disruptions on routes toward Siegen. Employees, students, and visitors to the University of Siegen are asked to check in advance for the latest regulations. An overview of the most important information on traveling to Siegen and tips on living there is available here.

Current Restrictions and Alternative Plans

The construction work will affect major rail lines in the region at various times. The transit authorities are organizing bus replacement service for the affected sections. Important information for commuters from the Rhineland and the Altenkirchen district: Starting in December 2026, the RE 9 (Rhein-Sieg-Express) service between Siegen and Cologne will be suspended for an extended period. As was the case in the summer of 2025, a rail replacement service (SEV) will be provided.

The exact replacement schedules for the individual construction phases are being developed step by step by the transit authorities. We will therefore update this page regularly. Anyone traveling by train should be sure to check the current connections before departure (see the “Replacement Schedules and Announcements” info box).

An Overview of the Closures

  • Period: July10, 2026, through December 11, 2026
  • Here’s what’s happening: DB InfraGO is carrying out large-scale renovations on the line between Siegen and Hagen (over 100 individual projects on bridges, tracks, and tunnels). 150 million euros are being invested to make the line more stable in the long term.
  • Impact on long-distance service (IC)
    • IC 34 (Frankfurt–Siegen–Dortmund): Trains have not been running via the Ruhr-Sieg route since April 21, 2026. Service on this route will not resume. The canceled trains are scheduled to be replaced by Regional Express (RE) trains starting in December. The RE 34 line will then run hourly, instead of every two hours as before, between Siegen and Dortmund. Regional train service will also be reorganized on the section between Siegen, Gießen, and Frankfurt.
  • Impact on Local Transit (RE 34 / RB 91)
    • During various construction phases, there will be varying train cancellations and rail replacement service (SEV) using buses. Please check the links below well in advance and allow extra time!
  • Further Information

  • Period: December11, 2026 – July 9, 2027
  • Here’s what’s happening: The section between Siegen and Hennef (Sieg) will be completely closed for a major renovation.
  • Impact on the RE 9 (Cologne–Siegen):
    • The RE 9 will be completely suspended between Siegen and Cologne. During this time, trains will operate exclusively on the section between Cologne and Aachen.
    • A rail replacement service (SEV) using buses will be provided for all canceled trains. During peak hours, the transit authorities plan to run additional express buses to keep travel times as short as possible. The exact schedules are not yet available. It is worth noting that construction work on the B 62 between Niederschelderhütte and Mudersbach was completed earlier than planned, which will have a positive impact on the travel time of the rail replacement service.
  • Further Information

  • Here’s what’s happening: Since spring 2025, the Rothaarbahn line from Siegen to Bad Berleburg has only been operational as far as Aue-Wingeshausen due to bridge closures. Construction work on the bridges will take several years. Between Aue-Wingeshausen and Bad Berleburg, there is a SEV service as well as bus line R 27, which runs to Siegen.
