Rent a Prof brings quantum cryptography into the classroom

Thomas Reppel

On Thursday, 3 July 2025, Prof. Dr. Ramona Wolf, junior professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Siegen, was a guest at the Weiterbildungskolleg Siegen as part of the "Rent a Prof" program.

In her lecture "The Physics of Randomness", Prof. Wolf gave exciting insights into her field of research: the importance of real random numbers for the security of modern communication systems. Using illustrative examples and interactive elements, she explained why randomness is not just randomness - and how quantum physics helps to generate truly unpredictable number sequences, which are essential for cryptography on the internet.

The students at the college took an active part in the discussion and used the opportunity to ask questions and do their own calculations. For an hour, complex science was conveyed in a tangible and understandable way - an example of how the "Rent a Prof" program promotes exchange between universities and schools and gets young people excited about current research.

A big thank you to Prof. Dr. Ramona Wolf for this lively insight into the world of quantum cryptography!
