Ulrich Exner, Martin Herchenröder (eds.): StahlKlang (SteelSound) (2026)

In a joint seminar offered by the Architecture and Music departments at the University of Siegen, students used the methods of their respective disciplines to analyze the consequences of industrial change.

In a second step, they responded artistically to their findings—resulting in short films that explore a particular aspect in depth and vividly convey it through sound and image: for example, as a pensive stroll through a hall, as a focused gaze on the minute details of a steel structure, or as a jarring interaction between angular, rigid architecture and the fluid, circular movements of the human body. Accompanying these scenes is music ranging from industrial soundscapes to delicate instrumental melodies.
