Obituary for Peter Kubior

It is with great sadness that we bid farewell to our colleague and friend Peter Kubior, who passed away on April 29, 2026 at the age of only 42.

Peter had been part of our Ubiquitous Design working group in Information Systems and the Fab Lab of Schools III since May 1, 2017. Many of us first got to know Peter through a question. How do I get a computer? Where is this cable? Which camera do we use? How do you edit a video? Can you mill it? How do you order something so that it gets through the university in the end? Peter usually knew. And if he didn't, he found out.

He had a special gift for making things possible. He knew his stuff, thought along with us, explained things patiently and precisely, found solutions and helped, even when the questions were asked repeatedly. Thanks to him, many of us understood how things work and at the same time experienced how much care, attention and generosity went into this support.

Peter was also the longest-serving employee in the Fab Lab, having accompanied it across several locations and played a key role in shaping it - he also shaped the area of occupational health and safety in the Fab Lab. This was the necessary basis for the safe and open operation that has been appreciated at the university and in the region for years. Peter looked after and supported our community, students and scientists in all machine areas.

Peter was smart, creative, curious and open. He enjoyed building, designing, tinkering and fiddling. He loved computer and board games, role-playing games, science fiction and good conversations in the hallway. We will miss his humor, his stories and his desire to get to grips with university processes.

His serious illness took a lot out of him over the years. We admire his courage, his openness and his bravery all the more.

We are grateful for the time we spent together. In him, we have lost a warm-hearted person, an exceptionally reliable colleague and a friend. He will remain in our working group, in the Fab Lab and in our memories.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to his family and friends.
