The Foreign Language Workshop is a language education center within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Siegen. The goal of this center is to help better integrate theory and practice, as well as research and teaching, during the initial phase of teacher training. It is also intended to provide a framework for contemporary, project-based, and media-supported courses. As such, the FSW serves as a model for the design of school-based forms of learning and teaching. Outside of class hours, its resources are available as a space for independent work, group work, tutorials, and the conduct of research projects. The FSW is also open to student teachers seeking new ideas.

Founded in 1998 by Prof. Dr. Annelie Knapp, the FSW has become a central hub for foreign language teaching methodology in Siegen. In addition to internet-enabled computers and a wide range of language-learning software, the center’s resources include a selection of print materials for teaching (textbooks and workbooks, ideas for classroom activities, reference materials), audio cassettes, and videos. The materials provided by publishers are supplemented by learning resources created by the students themselves, such as those for station-based learning.

The FSW focuses primarily on the teaching and learning of English, but also offers materials for French, Spanish, and Latin. Popular highlights include the regular “English Wednesdays” featuring English-language games
