The examination takes the form of a 2-hour written exam.

There will be 2 questions from two subject areas (one question per subject area). Both questions must be answered. The exam is only passed if both questions have been answered sufficiently.
If you fail, the exam can only be taken again the following year.

  • Ancient history
  • European history of knowledge and communication in the modern era

Preparation

Please read the following literature to prepare for the exam.

  • Ancient History:
    Ulrich Huttner: Römische Antike, Tübingen 2nd edition 2013, pp. 33-60 and pp. 104-193.
  • European history of knowledge and communication in the modern age:
    Frank Bösch: Mediengeschichte. Vom asiatischen Buchdruck zum Fernsehen, 2nd edition Campus Verlag: Frankfurt/Main 2011 (= Historische Einführungen 10), chapters 5 and 6 (pp. 143-226).

Literature will not be provided; candidates must obtain it independently. The exam questions will be based on the literature provided.
