From August 2023, the Occupational Health Center (AMZ) will once again be offering our employees aged 40 and over a general check-up. If there is an acute need, we will also be happy to arrange an appointment for younger employees for a general check-up.

Examinations for working at VDU workstations (eye test with a medical consultation) will continue to be offered to all employees.

Occupational health screening (examinations) are regulated in particular by the "Ordinance on Occupational Health Screening - ArbMedVV".

The purpose of these examinations is to identify possible health problems that may result from occupational activities at an early stage and then to be able to treat them easily if necessary.

The examination can be repeated every 3 years and participation is voluntary for most activities.
The employer only receives information that the examination has taken place. Medical data or details of illnesses are subject to medical confidentiality; they are therefore only disclosed to the persons examined.

The ArbMedVV provides for various reasons for such preventive medical check-ups, e.g:

• Regular work with display screen equipment (VDU work/PC)
• Regular wet work (this also includes wearing protective gloves) between 2 and 4 hours/day
• Regular work in areas with daily average noise levels of between 80 and 85 dB(A)
• Working with dust masks of classes P1 and P2 ("simple dust masks")
• Working with various (mostly carcinogenic) hazardous substances

Employees can register for the examinations via Department 1.1 "Occupational Health and Safety" (Ms. Falkenheiner) by calling 740-5771.

For a few activities at the university, the employer must have the employees examined before they are deployed for the activities. The mandatory screening must be repeated at regular intervals. Of course, there is no such thing as an exemption!

This mandatory precaution includes

• Working with class P3 dust masks, filter masks or ambient air-independent respirators (compressed air breathing apparatus)
• Regular work in noisy areas with a daily average >85 dB(A) or pulse peaks > 135 dB(C)
• Regular wet work >4 hours/day
• Working with special hazardous substances where the permissible workplace limit values are exceeded (additional technical measures are usually also required here).
• Work in the controlled area of radiation protection areas.

The requirement for mandatory examinations is usually determined by the supervisor as part of the risk assessment. They register the employees for the examinations via the safety department. After the examination has taken place, the supervisors receive notification that the employees have taken part. Here too, no further data is transmitted to the employer without the express consent of the employees.

The employees covered by "mandatory preventive care" are stored in a file by Department 1.1 and automatically receive a new examination date (usually every 3 years).
