Prof. Dr. Giovanni Cerchiari

Researches how to make atoms invisible and develops new technologies based on antimatter

My professorship is titled:

Atoms and Light (Faculty IV)

This is what my research is about:

My team and I investigate new applications for quantum physics with single atoms and “antimatter”, which is the “counterpart” of matter that can be artificially synthetized and controlled in particle accelerators. Our challenging objective is to make individual atoms invisible by controlling their light emission; and the study of new technologies based on antimatter. These are thrilling new investigations in quantum and atomic physics that connect us with a vibrant international network of collaborators all around Europe.

That’s what fascinates me most about my field of research:

I find it fascinating to control the fundamental properties of nature’s building blocks, such as atoms and light. Our aspiration is to control the spontaneous processes of nature to develop deterministically reproducible methods, paving the way for future influential technologies.

I chose to come to the University of Siegen because:

My professorship is made possible by the support of the NRW- Rückkehrprogramm and the University of Siegen stands out as the ideal go-to place for my activities. The University offers an inclusive atmosphere and surrounds me with the right experts of ion trapping, quantum technologies and high-energy physics in which our projects can thrive.

My most interesting stops along the way:

•    Studied in the lively city of Milano.
•    Pursued my PhD in the charming city of Heidelberg.
•    Extended my growth as a scientist surrounded by the mountains in Innsbruck.
•    Happy to be in the beautiful and active city of Siegen
•    Always have been attached to experiments at CERN

That’s what students learn in my courses, e.g.:

My students learn how to divide challenging physics questions into smaller and manageable problems. In my courses, we focus on quantum physics and laser spectroscopy with an interactive approach that leads students to use the most advanced tools for simulation of atomic and quantum systems.

In my free time I like to:

Follow my favorite artists by visiting concerts and stay outdoors. Look up! You may spot me flying my paraglider.
