Prof. Dr. Okyay Altay

Analyzes how e.g. wind, traffic or earthquakes affect the statics of buildings

My Professorship is titled:

Structural Analysis

This is what my research is about:

As an engineering discipline, structural analysis connects mathematical and mechanical concepts with the design aspects of civil engineering. Our research focuses on developing innovative methods for modelling and computer-aided simulation of various materials and structures. These methods are crucial to ensuring the safety, stability and serviceability of buildings and structures.

That’s what fascinates me most about my field of research:

I’m particularly interested in data-driven analysis of dynamic actions such as wind, traffic, or earthquakes. By enabling more precise and faster analyses in both the planning and use phases of structures, we contribute to addressing ecological and economic challenges.

I chose to come to the University of Siegen because:

The University of Siegen offers numerous interdisciplinary and complementary research groups that together provide an infrastructure ideally suited to my research topics.

My most interesting stops along the way:

Doctorate and postdoctoral qualification (habilitation) at RWTH Aachen University,
previously project manager in structural engineering at Bernard Ingenieure ZT GmbH in Vienna.

That’s what students learn in my courses, e.g.:

The courses offered by the professorship cover both introductory and advanced topics in structural system analysis. Starting with simple static frameworks and progressing to dynamic systems, we prepare students specifically for their future roles in civil engineering.
