Practical semester

Applications for the school placement part of the internship semester are made via the portal for the allocation of internship places in the internship semester (PVP). This portal is a nationally standardized online application procedure that is tailored to the respective university. The portal is activated once a semester for approx. two weeks and is then accessible to all students who are eligible to register in order to apply for a place.

Registration and allocation of places for the internship semester are tied to specific dates and deadlines.

Zeitliche Verortung des Praxissemesters

Students of the BK teaching degree program in Model C can begin the school practice part in February and September.

You are entitled to apply for an internship semester place if you meet the following formal requirements:

  1. completed Bachelor's degree in teaching,
  2. Enrollment in the Master's degree program for the teaching profession at the University of Siegen,
  3. Attendance and admission to your preparatory seminars for the practical semester in the subjects you have studied and in the educational sciences in one of the unisono semesters before the start of the practical school part of the practical semester.

Notes on points 2) and 3): "Conditional admission" to the Master's teaching degree program is not sufficient. Please note that the deadlines for registering for the school placement part of the practical semester are before the deadline for conditional admission from the Registrar's Office.

Your personal details and, in particular, your preferred schools will be taken into account when allocating internship places. The information on the respective teaching profession, the personnel and subject-related capacities of the individual schools and ZfsL are also taken into account in the allocation process.

The total and subject capacities of all ZfsL and schools in the training region of the University of Siegen are taken into account. The training region includes the training areas of the ZfsL Hagen, Lüdenscheid, Siegen and (in exceptional cases) Dortmund and thus schools from the district of Siegen-Wittgenstein, the district of Olpe and the Märkischer Kreis for all teaching subjects. The city of Hagen and the Ennepe-Ruhr district provide additional training schools for the teaching subjects HRSGe and BK.

The number of places available at the approximately 330 training schools in the Siegen training region is determined by the range of subjects offered and the number of teachers at the schools. Schools with up to 15 full teaching posts generally offer 2 internships per school semester, schools with more than 30 full teaching posts offer 5 internships.

Depending on your subject combination and teaching degree, you will be shown a list of possible internship schools during the online registration process, from which you can select five schools of your choice.

Please note that schools may have partial locations that are not listed in the PVP. Your internship semester may therefore take place at a location other than the main location listed in the PVP. The ZLB therefore recommends that you contact the respective schools to find out about possible locations before finalizing your wish list.

The school type reference in the practical semester is described in the document Practical elements in the teaching degree programs
(4. Regulations for the practical semester in schools and centers for practical teacher training). "(6) The practical semester is completed in a type of school corresponding to the teaching profession in the subjects studied (teaching subjects, learning areas or subject areas). The practical semester for the teaching degree at Hauptschulen, Realschulen, secondary schools and comprehensive schools can also be completed at secondary schools and community schools. The practical semester for the teaching degree in special needs education can be completed at special schools and schools of other school types, provided that the schools of other school types have special needs education training opportunities. Details are regulated by the district government."

Important restriction! The schools that you attended as a pupil in the past should generally not be chosen! (see framework concept of the internship semester, 4.1) During the application process, you will be asked to exclude these schools. Schools at which school internships have been completed do not need to be excluded.

fter creating the wish list, you will be asked to enter a geographical location (e.g. your own place of residence or the place of residence of family members). This location point will be taken into account if none of the 5 desired schools could be assigned to you. In this case, you will be allocated the school closest to the location point and the closest ZfsL with free places. The PVP distribution algorithm generates a distribution for all students who are distributed via the location point, which results in the least amount of travel time overall.

In the application procedure, serious social aspects can be invoked to justify a location requirement. A hardship application can be submitted to the internship office of the ZLB before the start of the application for a place in PVP, stating and proving personal, social criteria (e.g. caring for children or family members, disabilities).

Please note the deadline for submitting hardship applications (see above under "Dates and deadlines") and use the "Hardship application" form provided there.

In order to reconcile a procedure that is as fair as possible in terms of distribution with a sensible spread of practical semester places across the training region, a regional class concept was developed that is applied when selecting the schools.

According to the current concept, schools are assigned to one of three regional classes depending on distance (public transport and km) (see Fig. 1):

  • RK 3: Schools in the Siegen area
  • RK 2: Schools with medium distances (public transport+km)
  • RK 1: Schools with long distances (public transport+km)*

When creating your wish list, regional classes 1 to 3 must be represented in such a way that there is no concentration of wishes in the immediate vicinity of Siegen. This means that requests for schools in the immediate vicinity of the University of Siegen with regional class 3 are balanced out by requests for schools in the wider area with classes 2 and 1.

When selecting schools, the so-called "balance principle" must be fulfilled. You can make a selection so that regional classes 1-3 are represented in such a way that the balance is either balanced or skewed to the right (see Fig. 2). The system automatically checks your details and only continues the application process if they match the regional class concept.

Note: For schools with long travel distances, it may be possible to apply for a grant for the practical semester. Further information can be found in the funding guidelines(Stipendium/Förderung des Praxissemesters für Lehramtsstudierenden)
and the homepage of the Student Secretariat.

Registration for the practical school part of the internship semester and the application for an internship place are carried out during the application phase in the portal for the allocation of internship places in the internship semester
portal. For more detailed information on the required process steps, we recommend the following step-by-step overview as well as our video tutorial
with detailed instructions on how to use the PVP.

Log in at the address www.pvp-nrw.de
with your university ID and the password assigned to you by ZIMT at the beginning of your studies.

Note: If you have completed your Bachelor's degree at a university other than the University of Siegen and/or are studying sport as a learning area or subject at the German Sport University Cologne, you must first be activated separately for authentication in the PVP. To do this, please contact praxisphasen@zlb.uni-siegen.de before logging into the PVP, stating your matriculation number and g-identifier of the University of Siegen ; if you are studying sport as a learning area or subject, please also submit a screenshot of your admission to a corresponding preparatory seminar with your matriculation number of the University of Siegen from DSHS Cologne.

Check that your personal and study data is correct and complete. If you have any problems, please contact support at praxisphasen@zlb.uni-siegen.de, stating your first name and surname.
Please also indicate whether you have already attended schools in the educational region as a student in the past.

Please note: You do not need to list schools at which you have completed school internships during your studies.

After confirming your profile data, you can find out in detail about the schools that can be selected for the type of school and subjects you are studying. You can preselect as many schools as you like from the school list displayed. Select at least 5 schools for your favorites list.

Note: Please note the information provided by the Freie Christliche Schule Siegen in the PVP portal under "School concept/Project options".

The next step is to add five schools from your favorites list to your wish list and sort them according to your personal priorities.

Enter a geographical location. This location point will be taken into account if you cannot be assigned to any of the five desired schools.

After checking all the details, finalize your selection and confirm your final wish list.

Please note: No more changes can be made after finalization.

You must then register in the PVP for the school placement part of the practical semester.

Please note: If you do not register in the PVP by the deadline, the registration/application for a place will be deemed incomplete and cannot be considered (cut-off deadline!) Once you have registered, the "Confirmation of application for a place" will be generated in the PVP. You can download this document for your records.

After the placement allocation process, which takes several weeks, you will be informed of the school place allocated to you. You can download the "Confirmation of placement allocation" from the PVP for your records. You will also be sent further information sheets on the Infection Protection Act, the duty of confidentiality and accident/work safety, which you must sign and hand in on your first day at school. You will also receive a letter of request for an extended certificate of good conduct.

You must submit an extended certificate of good conduct (EFZ) to the assigned ZfsL by the start of the practical school part of the practical semester at the latest (in accordance with the Teacher Training Act as amended on 06.05.2016). If the responsible ZfsL does not have an extended certificate of good conduct at the beginning of the practical school part of the practical semester, you will not be permitted to complete the practical school part.
At the same time as the "notification of the allocation of a work placement", you will receive a form for applying for an extended certificate of good conduct via PVP. You can apply for the extended certificate of good conduct at the citizens' office responsible for you. The extended certificate of good conduct will be forwarded by the citizens' office to the responsible ZfsL, which is specified on the application form (document type: OE).
The costs of approx. 13€ will not be reimbursed. Under certain circumstances, students may be exempted from the fees. Further information can be found in the information sheet on fee exemption

If you have a second EU citizenship, you must apply for a European Certificate of Good Conduct at the citizens' office responsible for you. Please note that the processing time will be longer and costs of €17 will be incurred.

Please note: The processing time can take several weeks. We therefore recommend that you apply as soon as possible after you have received the "notification of the allocation of an internship". Please also keep the fee receipt for any proof of timely application.
