About the Jena Heimatbrief "Der Schnapphans"

During the division of Germany, this Heimatbrief was intended as a link between people who had left the Soviet Occupation Zone (SBZ) or the GDR, but who wanted to preserve their inner connection to their homeland. This Heimatbrief has fortunately survived after the regained unity, initiated by GDR citizens, thanks to continued lively demand. And not least because this publication, in addition to its function as a town chronicle under the editorship of Dr. phil. Detlev Ignasiak, this publication has reached the level of a cultural-historical magazine. Even after more than three decades of German unification, "Der Schnapphans" has remained a very reliable publication, appearing twice a year in the middle and at the end of each year, punctually and clockwork-like. The founders and the "Heimatkreisbetreuer" of the Jenaer Heimatkreis in West Germany published this "Jenaer Heimatbrief", "intended for the Jenenser of the Federal Republic with West Berlin and abroad." But they also took care of "Jena reunions" in the West, supported by a very considerable circle of readers and thus "supporters" of initially at least 700 people - intercontinentally extending to Argentina, South and Southwest Africa, as well as to the U.S.A. and Canada.

The choice of the name "Der Schnapphans":

"Der Schnapphans" is one of the "Seven Wonders of Jena: Ara, caput, draco, mons, pons ,vulpecula turris, Weigeliana domus - Septem miracula Jenae". Caput, the head, refers to the Schnapphans. In earlier times, many towns had an elaborate town clock. Above the dial of Jena's town hall clock, for example, there is a head, the "Schnapphans", which opens its mouth very wide on the hour.

Previous articles by Bodo Gemper, a native of Jena who had to flee to West Germany in 1959 as a result of political denunciation, have appeared in the Jena local history magazine "Der Schnapphans":
