wandertalk Nº14
From the studio to the street and back
wanderspace develops and realizes art projects together with national artists and regional actors in South Westphalia that enable cultural participation. Art and artistic strategies unfold in public spaces and are the starting point and point of reference for encounters.
Markus Zimmermann is our guest for wandertalk Nº14. The sculptor lives and works in Frankfurt and develops an artistic practice that understands sculpture as a social and spatial process. At the center of his work is the question of how art can enable social participation and create communal experiences. Zimmermann works both as an individual artist and in the ART ASHRAM and SUPERFILIALE collectives.
Zimmermann is currently working on the social and standardizing structures of sport. In projects such as "DIY Ping Pong", he develops alternative forms of collective play in which cooperation, improvisation and joy are more important than competition and performance. His works combine sustainability, participation and spatial thinking with an open, community-oriented idea of sculpture.
Markus Zimmermann was awarded the ars viva prize in 2010/11. His works have been exhibited at the Bonnefantenmuseum Maastricht, the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, the Kunsthalle zu Kiel, the KW Institute for Contemporary Art Berlin and the Center Georges-Pompidou Paris, among others. In 2022, he realized the participatory work "Future-Fossils-Factory" with the collective ART ASHRAM for documenta fifteen in Kassel.
