Ethics Council of the University of Siegen

The Ethics Council of the University of Siegen (see official notification no. 129/2015) advises and supports researchers working at the university in all matters relating to research ethics. It helps with the ethical weighing up of opportunities and risks, examines and evaluates research projects from an ethical point of view - particularly with regard to the protection of human dignity and the autonomy and self-determination of people involved in research projects. In addition, the Ethics Council issues opinions on individual research projects.

Please note that ethics proposals can be submitted at any time. If a decision on your application can be made by circular resolution, you can expect to receive an ethics vote within approximately one month.

If it is not possible to reach a decision by circular resolution, the discussion will usually take place at the next meeting of the Ethics Council. You will be informed of the meeting at which your request is likely to be dealt with as soon as we receive your request.

Please also note that the complete application documents must be submitted at least two weeks before the respective meeting.

Application procedure:

Upon application, the Ethics Council gives its opinion on the ethical justifiability of the objectives and procedures of a research project at the University of Siegen before it is carried out. It sees itself as an advisory body.

It is not necessary to submit a long proposal for every study. You can use the following preliminary check to determine whether a long application is necessary for your project, whether a statement from the data protection officer is sufficient or whether no application needs to be submitted.

Based on the information you provide, an automatic recommendation on how to proceed will be created. If you have any further questions or uncertainties, please contact the office.#

You can view the questionnaireHERE .

Forms for the preliminary check:

Please note:

The first form ("Acceptance of responsibility") must be submitted in all cases. The other documents are only required if you need a reference number from the Ethics Council as part of the fast-track procedure (e.g. for the publication of your research results). In this case, we also ask you to submit the result of the LimeSurvey query as a PDF document.

The two documents for the declaration of consent must be selected and submitted alternatively, depending on the procedure chosen.

You will then receive feedback on whether a long-form application is required and which specific documents need to be submitted.
