Workshop: "Church Music After the Second Vatican Council"

On May 12, 2026, the workshop “Church Music After the Second Vatican Council” took place. Participants discussed what research into Catholic church music after 1945 might look like.

Under the title “Between the Rhine, the Ruhr, and the Tiber. Catholic Church Music in the Bonn Republic: The Case of Gustav Biener (1926–2003),” Benjamin Sutorius (Arnsberg) and Johannes Wedeking (Haan) presented a prototypical example of a church musician and his work between 1949 and 1989.
Prof. Dr. Evelyn Buyken then gave a keynote address outlining ways in which this era of church music could be explored and researched from both artistic and scholarly perspectives.
Inspired by both presentations, a lively discussion ensued among the participants.
