Federal subsidies
Research projects are funded at federal level by various ministries - such as the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK) or other public funding bodies.
The focus is primarily on application-oriented projects that bring new ideas, technologies or processes into practice. However, basic research is also funded in some programs.
In addition to current calls for funding, there are also permanently open programs, such as KMU-innovativ, which are aimed particularly at small and medium-sized enterprises.

Please note
Applications for third-party funding - e.g. to federal or state ministries and their project sponsors - cannot be submitted by individual researchers, institutes or faculties, but only by the University of Siegen as a legal entity.
Therefore, these applications must be signed in a legally binding manner by the university management or an authorized representative. The signature is only given after prior review by the Research Funding Office.
To ensure that everything runs smoothly, there is a binding timetable for consultation and review, which you will find in the document below along with further information.
Own shares
If you have to show the University of Siegen's own contributions in your application and cannot provide these from a resource available to you, this must be clarified with the university management before signing the application. Please note that this will extend the processing deadline for your application. Please clarify in good time
- with the faculties involved about their support, e.g. basic equipment, also with regard to rooms and infrastructural equipment (PCs, office materials, use of laboratories, etc.)
- with the Rectorate for any further support required
Electronic application
Most applications for third-party funding must now be submitted electronically. This requires a great deal of information that requires special knowledge of content, form requirements and application documents. An independent check is particularly recommended for the financial calculation - it increases the security of the application submission.
After electronic submission, the legally binding signed paper version must usually also be submitted. The signature can be obtained and the documents sent via the Research Funding Unit.
Tip: If you are preparing the application submission yourself, use our "easy" completion guide - it contains all the important information specifically for applications from the University of Siegen.
