The most important information at a glance
Application, enrollment, transfer, withdrawal
In some undergraduate degree programs at the University of Siegen, there are more applicants than there are places available. Therefore, a selection must be made and the degree program is considered to be admission-restricted. An application is required for this. For degree programs without admission restrictions, free enrollment is possible.
In some degree programs, further requirements must also be met regardless of admission restrictions, e.g. aptitude tests or pre-study internships. Details can be found in the course descriptions.
For Bachelor's degree programs with admission restrictions, you must apply by July 15 of each year. You can find all information about applying on the following website: www.uni-siegen.de/zsb/bewerbung/index.html
If you would like to study an open-admission degree program or have been admitted to a restricted-admission degree program, you must enroll in order to begin your studies. You can find all further information on enrollment (also known as "matriculation") here.
If you have been admitted to another degree program (see account in the online portal) and want to change after you have already enrolled, you can transfer to the other degree program without re-enrolling. If you wish to withdraw from your studies after you have already enrolled, you should also contact the Registrar's Office immediately. Fees already paid can be refunded by the end of September or the end of March at the latest.
Uni Siegen app and student ID card (digital and printable)
The Uni Siegen app is a practical companion for everyday university life. Information on installation and functions can be found at https://www.uni-siegen.de/campusapp/. The Uni Siegen app offers a digital student and library card.
In addition, a student ID card and enrolment certificates are available to all enrolled students as PDF files for printing in their personal unisono account under "My studies" -> "Student services" -> "Notifications/certificates" tab.
Student e-mail address / access to the digital learning platform "Moodle"
When enrolling at the Center for Information and Media Technology (ZIMT, see Chapter VI: Who can help me?), all students are assigned an e-mail address by the University of Siegen. You can activate this yourself via your personal unisono account. To do this, as soon as you have logged into unisono, click on the "Student life" button in the top navigation bar and then on "ZIMT account" in the left-hand navigation bar. If you click on the link provided there, your student e-mail address will be activated automatically. The university e-mail system "Webmail" can be accessed via all homepages of the University of Siegen: mail.uni-siegen.de
Please check your student e-mail account regularly, as all official letters, including the respective payment request for the coming semester, are sent there. Please only use this student e-mail address for internal university communication (with lecturers, the Registrar's Office, examination offices, service facilities, etc.) so that staff can recognize you as a student of the University of Siegen. You have the option of setting up forwarding to your private address for incoming university emails.
The Center for Information and Media Technology (ZIMT) of the University of Siegen offers the possibility to support web-based courses with the learning management system "Moodle", i.e. virtual course rooms can be used to accompany classroom teaching. In order to gain access to the documents stored by lecturers in Moodle, you must have activated your student e-mail address or your ZIMT account once. What is unisono and how does it work?
You can use the unisono online portal to plan and organize your studies. Here you will find the following important information and options:
- Application for study places
- Courses for all degree programs and subjects (location, time, lecturer, description, booking)
- Creation of timetables
- Teacher details (address, office hours etc.)
- Registration for internships
- Exam registration and deregistration
- Printout of current study certificates that you need to submit to other offices etc.

The library
As an academic institution of the University of Siegen, the University Library ensures the supply of literature and information for university members in research, teaching and studies. The University Library's collections and other services are spread over several locations. Modern book scanners are also available in each branch library. Students at the University of Siegen can activate a digital library card in the university app, which entitles them to borrow library media (see below) free of charge. However, fees will be charged if loan periods are exceeded. Jackets, bags, food and drinks may not be taken into the library. There are lockers in the entrance area of all locations.

Registering for courses via unisono
You can use the online portal unisono to plan and organize your studies. Courses must be registered for in unisono before the start of lectures. By registering, you indicate your interest in attending the course. Please note the general registration deadlines, which are published in the menu item "Courses" in the submenu "Show course catalog". There is usually an extended deadline for first semester courses. However, the respective institution decides whether there is a deadline for registering for a course. Please always direct any questions to the respective faculty or chair. How do I create my timetable?
The examination regulations (PO) govern the basic structures of all degree programs. The subject-specific regulations (FSB) and subject examination regulations (FPO) regulate the content and requirements of the individual subjects offered in the degree program. The documents are accompanied by study plans that show the recommended exemplary course of study in the individual subjects. Supplementary regulations are contained in the module handbooks and the internship regulations of the respective faculty. The module handbooks can also be part of the appendix under the title "Module description". Before starting your studies, we recommend that you at least take a look at the curriculum of your degree program so that you know which modules are planned for the start of your studies. Please also read the relevant module handbook to find out what content and requirements you can expect from each module and how and when you can successfully complete the module. Once you have found the courses you want to/should attend in your first semester on the basis of this research, please do not forget to register for them in unison before the start of lectures. Preliminary courses
For some degree programs and subjects, preliminary courses are offered to make it easier to start studying. These can be attended voluntarily by first-year students. The preliminary courses usually take place in the weeks before the start of the semester. For example, various mathematics pre-courses are regularly offered to prepare students for the relevant degree programs. We strongly recommend that first-year (teacher training) bachelor's students in mathematics, science, engineering and economics courses/subjects take part in the preliminary courses. First semester introduction (ESE)
Introductory events are held for all first-year students before the start of lectures - the so-called ESE (first semester introduction), where help is usually also offered with timetabling. There are additional offers for international first-year students, which are specifically pointed out upon admission. Rooms in student halls of residence
You can apply for an affordable room in a student hall of residence via the Studierendenwerk Siegen. Please note that experience has shown that the number of applicants for student halls of residence exceeds the number of rooms available, i.e. you are not guaranteed a place in a hall of residence. Apartment
The classified ads in the local daily newspapers as well as the free weekly newspapers also contain housing offers:

It is also possible to look for an apartment through private estate agents. However, estate agents usually charge a brokerage fee of two months' rent plus VAT when brokering an apartment.
Another option is housing partnerships between landlords who want help with the household or running the business and students who offer to help for a lower rent. These partnerships are arranged via the online portal www.mitwohnen.org, for example.

Registration/registration/relocation
Anyone moving to Siegen must register or deregister at the Citizens' Registration Office (Einwohnermeldeamt). The city of Siegen has citizens' offices at four locations (Eiserfeld, Geisweid, Siegen, Weidenau).
If you move to a municipality outside Siegen, you must register at the local residents' registration office (usually in the town hall).
Please inform the Registrar's Office of your new address after your move so that the University of Siegen's post can reach you. Please do not forget to put your name on the mailbox.
Reimbursement of the Germany semester ticket
If you move to Siegen and register your main residence there for the first time, you can have the fee for the Deutschland-Semesterticket refunded once. To do this, go to the AStA office (AR-Campus, room AR-H 105) with your certificate of enrollment and confirmation of registration.
Studibus for the move
In order to support any relocations, the AStA of the University of Siegen cooperates with the company "einfach mobil Carsharing GmbH", which offers an uncomplicated and particularly inexpensive car rental service for students with its online platform "Studibus". Students at the University of Siegen can take advantage of this offer. You can get the Studibus and the customer card at the partner petrol station Aral in Sandstraße in Siegen (the petrol station is located between the bus stops Kaisergarten and Emilienstraße). By bicycle/e-bike
The city of Siegen has Germany's longest "covered" cycle path (large parts of the cycle path between Siegen main station and Siegen Geisweid run underneath the city highway - HTS). Somewhat more centrally, one lane on the main connecting road between the districts of Geisweid, Weidenau and Siegen city center has been rededicated as an "environmental lane" for bus and bicycle traffic. Overall, however, the cycle path network in Siegen still has room for improvement. Reaching the university campuses, most of which are located on hills, by bike is a particular challenge. It is somewhat easier with an e-bike, for example.
By bus
You can reach the university campuses quickly and easily by public transport. Bus lines C 106 and C 111 and, from the week before the start of lectures (ESE week) until one week after the end of the lecture period, the university express lines UX1 (from Siegen main station/ZOB), UX 2 (from Siegen-Weidenau station) and UX 5 (from Langenholdinghausen - "Wildrose" residential complex via Siegen-Geisweid station / ZOB-Geisweid) will take you directly to the university locations on Haardter Berg: Adolf-Reichwein-Straße (AR), Hölderlinstraße (H) and Paul-Bonatz-Straße (PB). You can reach the Emmy-Noether-Campus (ENC) by taking the C114 line from Siegen main station (direction Fischbacher Berg). During the lecture periods, there is a direct connection UX 4/6 for a quick change between the locations on Haardter Berg, the city center (Campus Unteres Schloss [US], bus stop Kölner Tor) and the Emmy Noether Campus (ENC). From the central bus station (ZOB) at the main train station, the location Unteres Schloss (US) can be reached with all bus lines that stop at the bus stop "Kölner Tor".
By car
There are various free parking facilities on Haardter Berg. We would like to point out that due to various construction measures and the generally tight parking situation in the entire Siegen city area, it is not advisable to travel by car. We are aware that in many cases - for example, if you are traveling to Siegen from rural areas - there is often no other option. For car drivers, there are "Park&Ride" facilities in Leimbachstraße, in Seelbach near the Freudenberg highway exit, in Geisweid near the ZOB and near the lower town opposite the Siegerlandhalle, from which - for those who do not want to change directly to the bus - carpools can be formed to the university locations.

BAföG (Federal Training Assistance Act)
BAföG is the colloquial term for the financial support and funding to which students are entitled, provided they meet certain criteria. The amount of funding is determined individually in each case. The contact person here is the BAföG office of the Studierendenwerk. In general, it is always advisable to submit an application. BAföG applications are available in the canteen and at the BAföG office of the Studierendenwerk. Students are subject to compulsory health insurance. Up to the age of 25, you can generally be covered by family insurance through your parents. If you are married or in a civil partnership, you can continue to be covered by family insurance beyond this age. Please inform your statutory health insurance provider immediately that you wish to enrol at the University of Siegen for the coming semester. Your statutory health insurance company will transmit your insurance status to the University electronically. The statutory health insurance companies offer reduced rates for students up to the age of 30. Your statutory health insurance provider can answer any questions you may have.
If you decide to take out private health insurance, you must immediately apply for exemption from the statutory health insurance obligation at a statutory health insurance company of your choice in order to enrol. If you are exempted from the statutory health insurance obligation, the exempting statutory health insurance company will transmit your insurance status electronically to the University of Siegen.
Please note that students who have been exempted from the statutory health insurance obligation during their studies can no longer receive the student tariff of the statutory health insurance obligation at a later date.

Academic advisors
The subject advisors are employees or professors of the respective faculties and provide information to prospective students who already know exactly what they want to study and whose subject-related questions are very specific. They also answer students' questions about the content of their degree course and the planned course of study. Examination offices of the faculties

Bridges to studying - the preliminary studies
Prospective students and students at the University of Siegen who are still unsure about their choice of degree course and would like to find out more about the university can register for or transfer to the Brücken ins Studium pre-study program free of charge for a maximum of two semesters. The program allows you to get a taste of other degree courses/subjects and to attend interesting workshops to make it easier to start your studies. Center for Teacher Training and Educational Research (ZLB)
The Center for Teacher Training and Educational Research (ZLB) is a central academic institution of the University of Siegen. The tasks of the ZLB include the coordination and organization of studies and teaching in teacher training together with the faculties as well as the promotion of increased cooperation between subject-specific science, subject-specific didactics and educational sciences. The ZLB has a learning workshop in the AR-D building where all student teachers are offered help and advice and where they can access a wide range of materials (there is a comparable didactic learning workshop for primary school teachers: the OASE in the AR-E building). In the SSC building, the ZLB offers the Central Examination Office for Teaching Qualifications, the Student Advisory Service for the teacher training courses and the Internship Office. Psychological counseling
The Psychological Counseling Service can help you with difficulties during your studies. The counselors clarify your problems individually with you, look for creative solutions and support you in actively implementing them. They also serve as contact persons in the event of seminar or exam anxiety and offer workshops on these topics (any workshop dates are also published on the website). Support for students with disabilities and/or chronic illnesses
The Representative for Disability Issues supports severely disabled or chronically ill students in preparing for their studies, during their studies and in examination matters. You can discuss problems with the Disability Officer when choosing a course of study, during your studies or when graduating and work with her to find solutions. Severely disabled or chronically ill students can obtain information here on study requirements, compensation for disadvantages, aids, career entry and all questions relating to student life. Student Services Siegen
The Studierendenwerk Siegen sees itself as a social partner for students at the University of Siegen and offers services in the areas of "student financing" (BAföG, KfW loan and DAKA loan), catering in the canteens, cafeterias and bistro and student accommodation with numerous places in halls of residence. Childcare, especially for student parents, is provided by the daycare center and FLEXI in the immediate vicinity of the university. The flexible childcare service FLEXI is aimed at all parents of the university and the Studierendenwerk with children aged between six months and ten years who require flexible childcare on an hourly basis.

Library
The University Library provides students and academics at the University of Siegen with literature for study, teaching and research. The media range includes printed books and journals as well as eBooks, eJournals and databases that provide direct access to electronic full texts. All media are listed in a common catalog, the Katalog plus. The library is spread over a total of five locations, in which numerous individual and group study areas as well as a family study room are available for learning and working. You will also find lounge areas with armchairs and beanbags to relax in the main library AR and in the sub-library US. As part of a differentiated course program, the University Library teaches the necessary skills for efficient literature and information research step by step. The courses are offered at regular intervals and take place in person or online (via Webex). We will keep you informed about new services as well as current events in the library in our BibBlog, via Instagram and in a regular newsletter. The staff at the Central Information Desk and the circulation desk are the first point of contact for all questions relating to the library.
Family Service Office
The aim and task of the Family Service Office is to provide advice and support in matters relating to the compatibility of career, science, studies and family. The Career Service is the central point of contact for students at the University of Siegen for all questions relating to starting a career and career planning. Alumni Association
The Alumni Association of the University of Siegen is the contact and service point for all alumni of the University of Siegen. With a wide range of services, the Alumni Association promotes the development of an interdisciplinary and international network of alumni, students and university staff. As a central service and coordination office, the Alumni Association supports alumni activities at subject level and networks professional exchange with the university. ZIMT (Center for Information and Media Technology)
A ZIMT account is required to access the internet via WLAN with your own devices, to log in to the Moodle learning platform or to use the university's computer rooms for the free Campuscloud sciebo. c) Student self-administration
Student bodies in NRW have the right to manage their own affairs. To this end, students draw up their own statutes and elect representatives at student council and university level. The constituted student body comprises all student structures within the university. It promotes the cultural, political and social participation of students and enables them to shape the university environment themselves.
The student body
All students at the university together form the student body and thus the basis of the whole. Based on this, there are various committees and organizational forms, some of which are elected (StuPa, AStA, FSRs) and others are open to all who wish to participate (autonomous departments, student initiatives). All committees and groups meet in public.
Student Parliament (StuPa)
The Student Parliament (StuPa) is the parliament of the student body. Elections are held every year (usually in June). University political lists are elected, some of which are based on parties, others are independent of parties. The StuPa's tasks include making decisions on matters concerning the student body, work assignments and monitoring the AStA, delegating representatives to various committees and much more. Above all, however, it decides on the student body's budget.
The General Students' Committee (AStA)
The General Students' Committee (AStA) is elected by the StuPa and is the executive body of the student body. It represents the interests of the students internally (e.g. towards the Senate and university management) and externally (e.g. media, press and public). The AStA has officers each with a specific area of responsibility. The organization of the AStA store and advice in the social department are just as much a part of the tasks as the financial processing of the semester ticket.

The student councils
The Student Representative Councils (FSRe) represent student interests at subject level. They represent the interests and concerns of the students of a faculty or a specific degree program vis-à-vis the faculty council, dean's office and lecturers. They are the first point of contact for problems with lecturers, studies and everything that happens at the level of the individual subjects or faculties. Representatives from the FSRs are often involved in the creation of new study regulations, sit on appointment committees for new professors and organize the student first semester introductions. Autonomous departments
Originally, the AStA officers were also assigned to departments such as the Women's Department, Foreigners' Department, etc.. They organized and represented their interests. However, as it was not particularly clear why an AStA officer should speak or act for these groups, these departments were spun off and given their own structures and funds (hence 'autonomous'). Over time, a few more autonomous departments were added, which represent special interests independently of the AStA and StuPa. The autonomous departments are allocated their own funds by the StuPa and must submit their own budget to the AStA. The central emergency number 0271/740-2111 applies to all acute emergencies on the university campus. University first aiders, as well as external emergency services, the fire department, etc. are notified from there.
