Getting started in research
With start-up funding and funding for project development, the university creates scope for new ideas at an early stage. Early career researchers benefit from tailor-made programs for doctoral and postdoctoral projects.
For researchers with strong research skills
Particularly committed and successful researchers are supported by specific funding lines and performance bonuses - including for the successful acquisition of third-party funding.
Strengthening internationalization
The university specifically promotes international networking and academic exchange through the visiting professorships programme - an important boost for the visibility of research in Siegen.

Internal support programs
Eligible to apply: Researchers at the University of Siegen (from postdoc upwards)
Object of funding: Start-up funding for new externally funded projects that are expected to be carried out at the University of Siegen
Funding amount: Flexible depending on the project

Eligible to apply: Professors at the University of Siegen
Object of funding:
- Start-up funding for the preparation of coordinated research projects in the application and funding phase
- Granting of a personal allowance for the spokesperson if the application is successful
- Granting of a research bonus and personal allowances for successful applications
- Reduction of the teaching load (individual agreement)
Funding amount: after individual agreement with the university management
Eligible to apply: Researchers at the University of Siegen who have acquired a third-party funded project
Object of funding: Premium for acquiring third-party funding
Funding amount: The amount of the premium depends on the funding format (see table).

Eligible to apply: Doctoral candidates at the University of Siegen
Object of funding:
- Doctoral scholarships Friends and Sponsors: 1 doctoral scholarship for 2 years (always announced in the spring of each year)
- House of Young Talents/ Young Academy: Award of doctoral scholarships, usually announced once per semester (=twice per year). The maximum duration is 3 (2+1) years.
Funding amount:
- Doctoral scholarships from friends and sponsors: €1,600/month
- House of Young Talents/ Young Academy: 1.750€/month+material costs

Object of funding:
- Transitional scholarships from the Equal Opportunities Officer for female doctoral and postdoctoral researchers: 6 months
- Funding for (research) projects on gender studies (usually 1 year)
Funding objective:
- Final funding for doctorates and habilitations of women
- Follow-up funding for projects to improve the situation of women in the higher education system and gender mainstreaming
Funding amount:
- Transitional scholarships: €1,250/month
- Depending on the project; total annual volume €15,000
