Department of Media Studies
Media shape our culture and our society. They are constantly changing. Research and teaching in media studies in Siegen have therefore continued to develop. With its interdisciplinary approach, the media studies department offers a broad spectrum of theoretical and practical approaches to media and media technologies. The acquisition of basic knowledge of media aesthetics, media theory and media history in the various degree courses is just as much a part of this as the examination of old, new and the newest media. One focus is on digital media technologies and methods of researching them. The Media Studies Department is involved in the research institutions SFB 1187 "Media of Cooperation" (since 2016) and SFB 1472 "Transformations of the Popular" (since 2021).

Research
The science of media has a tradition in Siegen that is unique in Europe and dates back to the 1980s. Today, digitally networked media and popular formats are researched in two special research areas and individual projects.
Study
Media accompany our lives. But how can we understand and shape them? If you study media studies in Siegen, you will deal with the meaning, history and aesthetics of media in theory and practice. From films and series to apps and games to software, AI and sensors - you can set your own focus.

The interplay between theory and practice is also expressed in a large number of student projects and initiatives.
