DHCP automatically assigns, for example, an ip address and provides all other relevant information such as the standard gateway or DNS server, whenever a computer, smartphone or printer connects to the network.
Furthermore, it is possible to assign a fixed ip address to a given, unique mac address. This provides the benefit that the same machine is always accessible via same ip address, which is useful, for example, in case of network printers.
Manually configuring every device is no longer necessary, which simplifies the configuration of the network, reduces the potential for errors (such as using an ip address twice) and enables new devices to be added seamlessly.
Our DDI system (DNS/DHCP/IPAM) offers the possibility that chairs of the university and other facilities can manage their network directly, which provides the additional benefit of using the IPAM (IP address management) view to get an overview over all ip addresses that are in use. Network admins responsible for a given network can request the ability to configure DHCP themselves via the support desk.
