SiWa Lecture-Seminar: Practical Training 2024
On November 19, 2024, the “SiWa Lecture Seminar: Practical Application” took place in the Department of Wastewater and Waste Management during the 12:30–3:00 p.m. lecture period. This free format, which is closely aligned with the lectures and can be held once (or at most twice) per semester course, is designed to address course content that goes beyond the original lecture module taught by Prof. Görg, or to complement it well from other perspectives and/or where the involvement of external experts and practical experience is considered beneficial.
The series kicked off in the winter semester of 2024/2025 in the Urban Water Management module (Bachelor’s Specialization B5) with the topic “Wastewater Disposal Using Welded Plastic Systems: The R.O.S.A. Case Study,” featuring an external speaker and a practical demonstration. The subject matter fit seamlessly into lecture unit “No. 9: Pipe Materials, Cross-Sections, Special Structures” and “No. 10: Construction and Operation of Sewer Systems.”
The approximately 20 participants—comprising university students and practicing engineers—enjoyed an engaging and interesting program on a current construction and environmental topic, featuring an in-depth technical presentation and hands-on demonstrations. The watertightness of sewer systems is particularly significant in a legal context across nearly all aspects of urban water management and is inevitably relevant to preventing impermissible environmental impacts.
R.O.S.A. Pipe Welding System
This documentation, featuring thermal images, explains the process of “electrofusion welding” for polypropylene (PP) plastic pipes! It clearly illustrates the thermoplastic behavior of the welding ring—or the pipe itself—inserted into the groove of the socket joint. After allowing for cooling times, the pipe joint is ready for use and leak-tight within a few minutes (tested in accordance with DIN EN 1610). The unique feature of the process shown lies in the use of KG2000 pipes (green), which can be used on civil engineering sites both as push-fit sleeves with sealing rings and in the aforementioned “welded” system.
