Teachers of educational sciences are repeatedly confronted with the following question:
"What requirements do I have to meet to be able to attend Master of Education courses as a Bachelor of Education student?"
Decisions of the ZLB Council on dealing with the completion of coursework and examinations in the Master of Education without a completed Bachelor's degree ("pre-study")
At its meeting on 25 October 2021, the ZLB Council decided to enable the completion of coursework and examinations in the Master of Education without a completed Bachelor's degree, so-called "pre-study", across all faculties for all teacher training courses under the following conditions:
- The basic possibility of pre-study does not give rise to a legal entitlement to course attendance and performance in the Master's degree course. The displacement of students regularly enrolled in the Master of Education is therefore excluded.
- Admission to preliminary studies requires that students have acquired at least 150 credit points across all subjects in the Bachelor's degree program. At least 2/3 of the credits must have been passed for the specific subject in which preliminary studies are to be undertaken. In addition, the Bachelor's thesis must have the status "registered" or "passed".
- Irrespective of the above-mentioned formal admission requirements, the basic decision on the admission of students to preliminary studies and on the possibility of providing credits lies with the lecturers of the course in question, taking into account the capacities and subject requirements.
- Pre-study is limited to a maximum of two semesters. A maximum of 30 credit points can be acquired. Excluded from the possibility of pre-study are all achievements in connection with the practical semester, including preparatory seminars.
- Failed attempts at examinations taken as part of preliminary studies are counted in the Master of Education.
With regard to the operational process of course registration, the following procedure was decided at the meeting of the ZLB Council on November 29, 2021:
- If participation in the enrolment procedure is planned for a course, the approval of the respective lecturer for the provision of credit (coursework and/or examination performance) within the framework of pre-study consists in the approval of the individual enrolment of the students concerned who wish to pre-study. It is the responsibility of the students concerned to contact the Central Examination Office for Teaching Qualifications by email during the registration period for the timely registration of these course(s). Registration therefore takes place during the registration period at the written request of the respective student.
- If no participation in the enrolment procedure is planned for a course, the students concerned are obliged to obtain the lecturer's consent in writing at the beginning of the course and to notify the Central Examination Office for Teaching Qualifications of their consent with a copy to the lecturer within the registration period with the request to register for the relevant course(s). Registration therefore also takes place during the registration period at the written request of the respective student.
