Where Am I Now and Where Do I Want to Go? – Individual Career Guidance for Early-Career Researchers
Sooner or later, doctoral and postdoctoral researchers need to consider what should come after their current stage of academic qualification. Do I want to pursue an academic career in research and teaching? Could a role in research management, that is, in a research-support function, be the right fit for me? Or might my professional prospects lie outside academia – for example in business, industry or the wider societal sector?
Contents of the counselling
In day-to-day academic life, clarifying one’s career goals and options is often given too little attention or is only addressed systematically when the doctorate is nearing completion, a fixed-term employment contract is about to end or the available period of employment under the German Academic Fixed-Term Contract Act (WissZeitVG) is running out. Yet reflecting on one’s interests, skills, professional aspirations and opportunities at an early stage and in a structured way is essential in order to make timely decisions about the next steps in one’s career.
The individual counselling provides space to take a closer look at your current situation and possible career paths, identify your personal strengths and areas for development, and clarify your professional goals. Together, we will explore which career path might suit you, which qualifications and skills it requires, and which of these you may still need to develop or acquire. On this basis, we will identify concrete next steps that will help you actively prepare for and pursue your chosen career path.
