The Bachelor’s program in Architecture at the University of Siegen equips students with the interdisciplinary knowledge necessary to meet the challenges of architectural complexity. By integrating specific design and construction projects into the curriculum (developed in consultation and collaboration with potential regional and national partners), the program fosters a pragmatic approach to work, in which potential solutions—in accordance with applicable guidelines and regulations— are to be discussed and scrutinized, as is the recognition that concrete architecture is far more than a purely functional assignment. In practice, this means practice-oriented, research-based planning within the context of an appropriate aesthetic consideration of the design task as an intrinsic element of the planning process.

Whenever you hire an architect today, you expect both technical and artistic expertise. It is therefore not a question of whether architecture is a more technical or a more artistic field; the essence of the discipline lies precisely in the fact that, unlike few other professions, it combines both dimensions.

The Structure of Your Architecture Program
Phase I of the Program
1st–3rd Semesters
Required modules: Cultural Studies and Theory, Fundamentals of Design, Design, Model Making, Design, CAD, Multimedia Systems, Building Construction, Materials Science, Structural Engineering, Building Physics, Building Science, Interior Design, and Urban Planning
4-week introductory internship ( usually before beginning the program)

Guiding Principle and Career Prospects
Bachelor of Science
The guiding principle behind the design of the bachelor’s program is its focus on the “traditional” career goal of becoming an “architect.”
Accordingly, the program’s goal is to prepare students for the professional responsibilities of an “architect,” that is, to enable them to undertake the design, technical, economic, ecological, and social planning of buildings. The program aims to train creative, competent, and critically thinking professionals for these professional responsibilities. The program’s educational objectives focus on providing a generalist education in architecture.
Work on design projects is the primary method of instruction. A wide range of elective courses provides opportunities for students to develop individual professional, technical, and communication skills.
Career Prospects
To obtain the protected professional titles of “architect,” registration in the “Architects’ Register” with the state bar associations for architects is required.
In accordance with the requirements of the EU Council’s Architects Directive of June 11, 1985, and the requirements of the Federal Chambers of Architects regarding the professional profile, the standard duration of study must currently be at least 8 semesters. Consequently, following the 6-semester bachelor’s program, a consecutive master’s program leading to a degree is required in order to apply for registration on the Architects’ Register. The registration requirements are governed by the architectural chamber laws of the individual federal states.
Master's Programs in the Department of Architecture
To qualify for the protected professional titles of architect, students must complete a consecutive master’s program leading to a degree following the 6-semester bachelor’s program.

Aptitude Assessment Process
In the aptitude assessment process, prospective students must demonstrate that they possess the artistic and creative aptitude required for the program.
The deadline for participating in the aptitude assessment process for the 2026/2027 winter semester is September 15, 2026 (postmark).
Applications for the aptitude assessment process must be submitted in writing. The following supporting documents must be included with the application:
- A tabular resume, including, if applicable, details of artistic, craft-related, or similar experience or training
- Proof of meeting the admission requirements
- A one-page DIN A3 essay on the topic “it could have been anything” ( assignment)

- Affidavit stating that the work was completed independently without outside assistance (see Appendix, page 2 of the assignment)

If you successfully complete the eligibility assessment process, you can enroll and then complete thefour-week introductory internship before the start of the academic year (October 1).
Registration
To enroll in a bachelor’s degree program at the University of Siegen, applicants must meet the general admission requirements (Abitur, vocational Abitur—see below). In addition, an aptitude assessment process is conducted to verify that applicants have specific program-related prior education, artistic aptitude, or other relevant qualifications.
The assignment is usually available no later than May of the respective year.
The following are therefore required:
- General admission requirements (Abitur, Fachabitur—see below)
- Successful completion of the aptitude assessment process
- The four-week introductory internship must then be completed by the start of the semester on October 1.

Application for Prospective Students with a Technical College Entrance Qualification
At the University of Siegen, it is possible to apply for a university Bachelor’s degree program even with a Fachhochschulreife. Participation in the aforementioned aptitude assessment procedure is also mandatory in this case. Applicants who are eligible for this route of admission to a university-level Bachelor’s program must submit their application to the Office of the Registrar.
Two requirements must be met:
- Proof of general education
Applicants with a grade point average lower than 2.7 on their Fachhochschulreife certificate must take exams in German, mathematics, and English, unless they received a grade of at least 2.0 in these subjects on their Fachhochschulreife certificate. Further information on studying without a high school diploma. - Proof of academic aptitude
This is demonstrated during a personal interview.
Interviews for the start of the 26/27 winter semester will take place on August 11 starting at 2:00 p.m.; invitations will be sent via email.
International Applicants
The Bachelor’s program in Architecture is a German-language program. Proof of German language proficiency is required.
If you obtained your university entrance qualification (Abitur) in Germany (“domestic students”) or are an EU citizen, please also apply via the application portal.
Participation in the aforementioned aptitude assessment is also mandatory in this case; international applicants should therefore send their complete application materials, including the required assignment, to STARTING.
