Dr. Matthias Weipert/Dr. Giuseppe Cusa, day excursion "Art of the Middle Ages. Meaning - Production - Mediation", Cologne, November 13, 2025, 10:15-15:30
Topic: Although historical scholarship is primarily concerned with textual sources, the spectrum of (pre-)modern legacies is far more diverse. For some time now, research and mediation have therefore also taken into account so-called realia of all kinds - i.e. objects, primarily but not only art objects. Christian art (ars sacra), which can be admired today in archives, museums and churches, is an essential part of the medieval centuries. On two guided tours in Cologne, we will get to know medieval art objects and their significance, production and display, as well as discussing their modern preservation and presentation. To this end, we will first be given a guided tour "Understanding medieval art" in the Schnütgen Museum, which will introduce us to materials, techniques and ideas and provide material samples that we can touch. We will then be guided through the cathedral treasury and the interior of Cologne Cathedral to take a closer look at precious art objects such as the Shrine of the Epiphany.
Time: Thursday, November 13, 2025, 10:15-15:30.
Meeting point: 10:15 am on the station forecourt in Cologne (between the main station and the cathedral). Arrival is individual.
Participants: 18 students

PD Dr. Astrid Windus/Dr. Matthias Weipert: Excursion Hamburg, June 23-26, 2025:
Colonialism and National Socialism in Hamburg - Interrelationships - Discourses - Reappraisal.
On this excursion, we will visit places that provide information about German colonial history and its colonial revisionist appropriation during National Socialism. We will look at the complex interrelationships between the colonial policy of the German Empire, the associated genocides and human rights violations and the National Socialist policy of expansion and extermination. This connection is the subject of a controversial and international debate among historians and victims' groups about the singularity of the Holocaust, possible continuities between colonialism and National Socialism and the question of the appropriate remembrance of these periods of German history. For this reason, the aspect of remembering and coming to terms with the history of the places we visit plays an important role in our program. We will explore the question of interconnections and continuities during a study day at the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial. In addition to a visit to the memorial, we will examine the extent to which colonial and racist thinking and actions continued to be effective into National Socialism - both with regard to the reality of life for Black people and People of Color in Germany, as well as with regard to National Socialist warfare in Eastern Europe.

The FrauenMediaTurm (FMT) in Cologne and the Frauenmuseum: Art, Culture and Research in Bonn
Description: How is the history of the old and new women's movement in Germany collected, preserved and researched? How are archives with these focal points created and how are exhibitions and places of learning developed from these collections? The excursion to two places of women's history in Cologne and Bonn - the FrauenMediaTurm (FMT) and the Frauenmuseum: Kunst, Kultur und Forschung e.V. - will address these questions.
At both locations, we will take part in guided tours that allow a look behind the scenes of the collections. The archives and museums can thus be experienced not only as a place of learning, but also as a place of work. Dr. Daniela Mysliwietz-Fleiß: 21.06.2024, day trip to the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum,
Exhibitions "Cultures of the World" and "I Miss You"
Founded in 1901, the ethnological museum preserves around 70,000 everyday and ritual objects and around 100,000 historical photographs from Oceania, Asia, Africa and the Americas. Based on this predominantly historical collection, the "Cultures of the World" exhibition opens up different perspectives on the shared cultural heritage with its diverse past, present and future levels of meaning.
The Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum, which houses the fourth-largest collection in Germany, is intensively examining this history in the context of the current nationwide negotiations on the transfer of ownership and return to Nigeria of the court artworks looted by British soldiers from the Kingdom of Benin in 1897. In the "I MISS YOU" exhibition, each of the RJM's 96 Benin court artworks is now staged in its own special individuality and not only shown in its beauty, but also reminded of the pain, loss and grief associated with it.
The excursion aims to place the exhibits themselves, their origin and history as well as the exhibition practice in the current postcolonial discourse in cultural studies. To introduce this discourse, a preparatory session will take place on Tuesday, June 4, 2024 at 6 pm in room AR-H 102.
Date and time: 21.06.2024, 11:30-16:30
Location: Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum, Cäcilienstraße 33, 50667 Cologne

Daniela Mysliwietz-Fleiß: Day excursion to the Zollern Colliery in the winter semester 2023/24.
Special exhibition "This is colonial. An exhibition workshop"
The morning cup of coffee, a street name or certain prejudices: Colonial history is still present in our everyday lives today - even in Westphalia. The participatory exhibition workshop "This is colonial." invites visitors to search for clues and is a meeting place, stage and field of experimentation all in one. It is not a finished exhibition, but is in the process of becoming and changing: in the form of artistic actions, workshops and interactive performances, visitors explore the traces and consequences of colonialism together with guests from civil society, art and science.
Together with curator Barbara Frey, we will not only explore the exhibition itself, but also discuss how it came about. Beforehand, a look at the museum's permanent exhibition will help us to discuss the connection between the exhibition venue Zeche Zollern and the theme of the exhibition.
The excursion is thematically linked to the seminar "Colonialism, Post-Colonialism and Colonial Traces to the Present" Attendance of the seminar is strongly recommended, but is not a prerequisite for participation. It is possible that the excursion will be held in English.

Daniela Mysliwietz-Fleiß: Day excursion to the Ruhr Museum, Essen, special exhibition Hands off the Ruhr! The occupation of the Ruhr 1923-1925, 02.06.2023
The special exhibition tells the story of everyday life under occupation in the Ruhr and the experiences of the soldiers stationed between Duisburg and Dortmund. In January 1923, the whole country looked on with fascination. The occupation of the Ruhr region by French and Belgian troops was perceived in Germany as just as unjust as the harsh conditions of the Treaty of Versailles. The passive resistance proclaimed by the government not only brought economic life in the Ruhr to a standstill, it also fueled hyperinflation and plunged many people into abject poverty.

Daniela Mysliwietz-Fleiß: Half-day excursion "A city and its river. Urban development as a subject of environmental history"
From the end of the 1960s until 2012, a large part of the course of the River Sieg through Siegen's city center was hidden under a concrete slab several hundred meters long. A large parking lot, a multi-storey parking lot and commercial buildings were located on it. The urban development measure was initially welcomed as an enhancement of the city, but perceptions changed over time, leading to a redesign as part of the "Siegen to New Shores" project, which reopened the bed of the Sieg and made the river and its surroundings a central feature of the city's quality of life. A decade after construction work began, the excursion aims to trace the urban development with a guided tour along the river and clarify questions about the connection between urban development and environmental perception.

Dr. Matthias Weipert: Day excursion AMS, Current challenges of "Education after Auschwitz" in schools and teacher training, February 28, 2023
Theodor W. Adorno's radio lecture "Education after Auschwitz" (1966) not only shaped the self-image of generations of educators after 1968. It also had a lasting influence on the way Nazi history was dealt with in Germany. Based on current research findings, the article examines the challenges of teaching Nazi history in schools under changed social conditions: Demographic change (generational change/flight/migration), the medialization and transnationalization of Holocaust remembrance, but also post-colonial constellations, such as those that have become clear in the controversy surrounding Dokumenta 15, will be the focus of the lecture. The lecture will also draw on current experiences from our own university teaching and draw conclusions for schools and teacher training.

Dr. Giuseppe Cusa: Day excursion to Aachen, "Medieval remains in today's Aachen. Preserve - Exhibit - Explore", January 20, 2023
What do you associate Aachen, located in the border triangle, with? Culinarily with the Aachen Printen? Their origins date back to the late Middle Ages! Culturally with the Charlemagne Prize, architecturally with Aachen Cathedral? Here, too, we inevitably look back, even to the early Middle Ages, as the annual award is named after Charlemagne (d. 814), who also had Aachen's St. Mary's Church built at the turn of the 9th century. The "Middle Ages" are therefore omnipresent today at the former coronation site of the Roman-German kings! The excursion will not (only) focus on this culinary or non-material heritage, but will also shed light on the material legacies from the medieval centuries and how we deal with them today. The program therefore includes a city tour that leads to the architectural remains in today's cityscape, a visit to Aachen's Marienkirche and the Cathedral Treasury or the Centre Charlemagne - Neues Stadtmuseum Aachen. The participating students will be actively involved in shaping this day excursion.

Dr. Daniela Mysliwietz-Fleiß: Day excursion to the Zollverein colliery and coking plant
The Zollverein Coal Mine and Coking Plant was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on December 14, 2001 as the "Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex". Since then, the former industrial complex has officially been one of the most important cultural assets in the world. In its justification, UNESCO named two central criteria for the decision: "The Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex in Essen is a remarkable industrial monument because its buildings are outstanding examples of the application of the design concepts of Bauhaus architecture in an overall industrial context. The technical and other structures at Zollverein XII document a decisive phase of Europe's traditional heavy industry, in which architectural concepts of exceptional quality were used sensitively and confidently." The excursion aims to take a closer look both at the buildings that have since been repurposed as part of the concept of "industrial culture" and at the history of the Ruhr area as a (former) industrial region in general.
Date and time: 13.01.2023, 12-17 h
Location: Zeche Zollverein, counter in the visitor center of the Zollverein coal washing plant shaft XII, building A14, Gelsenkirchener Str. 181, 45309 Essen
