Tips for New Students

Starting university marks an exciting new chapter in your life, bringing many changes and important questions: "How do I create my class schedule?", "How will I manage my finances?", "What is campus life really like?", "What does the city of Siegen have to offer me?" To help you get started on the right foot, we've gathered the most essential information about beginning your university journey.

Welcome Week (ESE) and preparatory courses:

Essential information at a glance

You must apply for restricted-admission bachelor's degree programs by 15 July of each year. Information about the application process can be found here.
If you would like to study a degree program without admission restrictions or have been admitted to a degree program with admission restrictions, you must enroll in order to begin your studies. You can find all further information on enrollment (also known as "matriculation") here.

In some degree programs, further requirements such as aptitude tests or pre-study internships must also be met regardless of admission restrictions. Details can be found in the course descriptions.

If you have been admitted to another degree program and would like to change after you have already enrolled, you can transfer to the other degree program without re-enrolling. Please contact the Registrar's Office.

If you wish to withdraw from your studies after you have already enrolled, please contact the Registrar's Office immediately. Fees that have already been paid can be refunded by the end of September or the end of March at the latest.

Uni Siegen app and student ID card (digital and printable)

The Uni Siegen app is a practical companion for everyday university life. Information on installation and functions can be found at

Campus app. The Uni Siegen app offers a digital student and library card.

In addition, a student ID card and enrollment certificates are available to all enrolled students as PDF files for printing in their personal unisono account under "My studies" -> "Student services" -> "Notifications/certificates" tab.

Student email address / Access to the digital learning platform "Moodle"

All students are assigned a University of Siegen email address by the university's Center for Information and Media Technology (ZIMT, see chapter VI: Who can help me?) upon enrollment. Once assigned, you can activate the account on your own via your personal unisono account. Simply log into unisono, click on the "Student life" button in the top navigation bar, and then on "ZIMT account" in the left-hand navigation bar. Click on the link provided there and your student email address will be activated automatically. The university email system "Webmail" is linked on all landing pages of the University of Siegen, and can also be reached at mail.uni-siegen.de

Please check your student email account regularly, as all official letters, including the fee statements for the upcoming semester, are sent there. Please use your student email address solely for internal university communication (with lecturers, the Registrar's Office, examination offices, service facilities, etc.) so that the staff can recognize you as a student of the University of Siegen. You have the option of setting up forwarding to your private address for incoming university emails.

The Center for Information and Media Technology (ZIMT) of the University of Siegen offers a web-based learning management system called "Moodle", which allows for virtual course rooms to accompany classroom teaching as well as other academic functions. In order to gain access to the documents stored by lecturers in Moodle, you must first have activated your student email address or your ZIMT account. Further information on this can be found at: www.zimt.uni-siegen.de/zielgruppen/studienanfaenger/

What is unisono and how does it work?

'unisono' is the university's online portal for planning and organizing your studies. It offers the following essential information and options:

  • Application for enrollment slots in specific programs
  • Courses for all degree programs and subjects (location, time, lecturer, description, registration)
  • Creation of class schedules
  • Lecturer details (address, office hours, etc.)
  • Registration for internships
  • Exam registration and deregistration
  • Printout of up-to-date proof of enrollment for presentation to government authorities, etc.

You can access unisono via the following link: unisono.uni-siegen.de/Video tutorials and the unisono wiki provide an introduction to the portal.

Library

As an academic institution of the University of Siegen, the University Library is responsible for maintaining the stocks of literature and information sources for university members in research, teaching, and studies. The University Library's collections and other services are spread over several locations. Modern book scanners are also available in each branch library. The following link provides an overview of which subjects are represented in which library location:

UB opening hours

A digital library card can be activated within the university app, entitling the user to borrow media from the library (see below) for free. However, fees will be charged if loan periods are exceeded. Jackets, bags, food and drinks may not be taken into the library. There are lockers in the entrance area of all locations.

The library also provides instruction on key skills for efficient literature and information research. You can find the current course dates here:

Training and courses

Registering for courses via unisono

You can use the unisono online portal to plan and organize your studies. Make sure to register for your courses in unisono before the semester starts. By registering, you’re letting the university know that you’d like to take part in the course.

You’ll find the general registration deadlines in the “Courses” menu under “View Course Catalog.” For first-year courses, the deadlines are usually a bit longer. That said, it’s always the department that decides whether a specific course has its own deadline.

If anything is unclear, just reach out to the department or the course chair. You can also find more details in the unisono help section — just click on the “?” icon in the portal.

How do I create my course schedule?

All degree programs are regulated by several related documents. First, a set of university-wide examination regulations (known in German as Rahmenprüfungsordnungen, or RPO) lay out the general framework. These are then complemented by subject-specific regulations (Fachspezifischen Bestimmungen, FSB) and departmental examination regulations (Fachprüfungsordnungen, FPO) which describe the content, structure, and requirements for the individual subjects that make up your program.
Recommended course sequences are included with the FPO to provide a semester-by-semester model for organizing your studies. Additional information is provided in the module handbooks and, where relevant, internship regulations for the respective faculties. Module handbooks sometimes also appear in the annexes to the FPOs under the title “Module description.”
Before you begin your studies, we recommend reviewing the recommended course sequence for your degree program to gain an overview of the modules you will encounter at the start of your studies. Just as important is the module handbook, which shows you what each module includes, the requirements you’ll need to meet, and how (and when) you can successfully complete it.
Once you’ve identified the courses you want or need to take in your first semester, don’t forget to register for them in unisono before the start of lectures.
Examination regulations and recommended course sequences:

www.uni-siegen.de/start/studium/organisation_finanzierung/pruefungsordnungen.html

Preparatory courses

For some degree programs and subjects, preparatory courses are offered to help make the transition into studying easier. These courses are voluntary and aimed at first-year students. The preparatory courses usually take place in the weeks before the semester begins. For example, mathematics preparatory courses are regularly offered to help students prepare for the content of their degree program. We strongly recommend that first-year bachelor’s students in teacher training, mathematics, natural sciences, engineering, and economics take part in these preparatory courses. More detailed information about the course schedule and registration is available from mid-February or mid-August at https://www.uni-siegen.de/en/preparatory-courses.

Welcome Week

Orientation events are held for all first-year students before the start of lectures as part of the Welcome Week (Erstsemestereinführung, ESE). Counselors are available for help with creating a class schedule, and there are additional offers for international first-year students, as is also indicate on their letter of admission. The Welcome Week program is announced in mid-February or mid-August respectively under the following link: Welcome Week

Apartments

The classified ads in the local daily newspapers as well as the free weekly newspapers also contain apartment listings:
" Siegerländer Wochenanzeiger www.swa-wwa.de
" Siegener Zeitung www.siegener-zeitung.de
" Westfalenpost www.wp.immowelt.de/

There are a large number of real estate search portals on the Internet that include rental offers for students, shared apartments (known as Wohngemeinschaften or WG), etc.. A good overview can be found on the website of the Dual Career Service of the University of Siegen:

https://www.uni-siegen.de/dualcareer/wohnungsmarkt/index.html.en?lang=en

It is also possible to search for an apartment through private brokers. Please note, however, that brokers typically charge a brokerage fee of two months' rent plus VAT when brokering an apartment.

Another option is housing partnerships between landlords who want help running the household, in exchange for a low or reduced rent. These partnerships can be arranged via the online portal www.mitwohnen.org, for example.

Temporary housing while relocating

To find temporary accommodations while looking for permanent housing and/or enrolling, or just to get to know the university town of Siegen and the region in advance, you can find an overview of hotels and vacation apartments at the following link:

Registration/registration/relocation

Anyone moving to Siegen must register or deregister at the Citizens' Registration Office (Einwohnermeldeamt). The city of Siegen has citizens' offices at four locations (Eiserfeld, Geisweid, Siegen, Weidenau).

If you move to a municipality outside Siegen, you must register at the local residents' registration office (usually in the town hall).
Please inform the Registrar's Office of your new address after your move so that University of Siegen postal mail can reach you. Please do not forget to put your name on the mailbox.

Reimbursement of Deutschland-Semesterticket costs

If you move to Siegen and register your main residence there for the first time, you can have the fee for the Deutschland-Semesterticket refunded once. To do this, go to the AStA office (AR-Campus, room AR-H 105) with your certificate of enrollment and confirmation of registration.

Booking a Studibus to move your things

To help students with the relocation process, the Student Union (Allgemeiner Studierendenausschuss, AStA) of the University of Siegen has esetablished a partnership with "einfach mobil Carsharing GmbH," which offers an uncomplicated, notably affordable car rental service for students through its "Studibus" online platform. Students at the University of Siegen can take advantage of this offer. The Studibus and the customer card can be picked up at the Aral gas station on Sandstraße in Siegen. (The gas station is located between the Kaisergarten and Emilienstraße bus stops.) You can find more information here: studibus.de/city/siegen

Germany semester ticket

As part of their semester fees, all students at the University of Siegen receive the Deutschland-Semester Ticket, which allows them to use local public transport throughout Germany. More information on this ticket can be found here.

By bus

You can reach the university's various campuses quickly and easily via public transit.

University locations on the Haardter Berg: Adolf-Reichwein-Straße (AR), Hölderlinstraße (H), Paul-Bonatz-Straße (PB), and Artur-Woll-Haus (AH) campus:

Accessible from Siegen main station/ZOB and Weidenau station/ZOB Weidenau year round with bus lines C 106 and C 111. Express buses also run starting one week before the official lecture period (i.e., for the Welcome Week) until one week after the end of the lecture period: UX 1 (from Siegen main station/ZOB), UX 2 (from Siegen-Weidenau station/ZOB Weidenau) and UX 5 (from Langenholdinghausen - "Wildrose" residential complex via Siegen-Geisweid station / ZOB-Geisweid). The Emmy Noether Campus (ENC) and Haardter Berg are connected to the UX 4/6 during the times mentioned.

Emmy Noether Campus (ENC)

Year round from Siegen main station/ZOB to the Emmy-Noether-Campus (ENC) via the C 114. Express buses also run starting one week before the official lecture period (i.e., for the Welcome Week) until one week after the end of the lecture period: the UX 4/6 from the university locations on Haardter Berg (AR, H, PB) and from Kölner Tor (city center).

University locations in the city center: Campus Unteren Schloss (US), Sandstraße, Friedrichstraße (F), Am Herrengarten (AH), and Fürst Johann Moritz Quartier

The locations in the city center can be reached within a quarter of an hour's walk from Siegen central station/ZOB and the Kölner Tor stop. From the locations on Haardter Berg (AR, H, PB and AE) as well as from Siegen main station Siegen/ZOB and Siegen-Weidenau/ZOB Weidenau station, locations in the city center can be reached year round with the C 111 line. Express buses also run starting one week before the official lecture period (i.e., for the Welcome Week) until one week after the end of the lecture period: the UX 1 and UX 4/6 (Kölner Tor stop). During that same period, the Emmy Noether Campus (ENC) and Siegen city center are connected by the UX 4/6 (Kölner Tor stop).

For people with limited mobility, the US campus can be reached from Siegen main station/ZOB with lines C 105, C 106 and C 107 to the Löhrtor stop and then, if necessary, via the elevator in Mensa US (Obergraben 18). Please note that the elevator is only accessible during the opening hours of the Mensa. Please also note that the return journey with the above lines is only possible by changing at Siegen-Weidenau/ZOB Weidenau station.

You can find all the information in graphic form

here.

To use public transport, we recommend the mobil.nrw app or the VWS app.

On foot

It is possible to move between the university locations on the Haardter Berg (Adolf-Reichwein-Straße (AR), Hölderlinstraße (H), Paul-Bonatz-Straße (PB). and Artur-Woll-Haus (AH) campus) within 15-30 minutes on foot. It is also possible to switch between the locations in the city center (Campus Unteres Schloss (US), Sandstraße, Friedrichstraße (F), Am Herrengarten (AH), and Fürst Johann Moritz Quartier) within 15-30 minutes. Switching between the city center, Haardter Berg, and Emmy-Noether-Campus (ENC) is not appropriate on foot, as they are roughly 5 kilometers apart. We recommend using public transportation or a bike/pedelec (e-bike).

Most of the campus locations are on hills. As a result, you can expect steep slopes on the way to most locations. We ask people with limited mobility to take this into account and to plan their journey by bus if necessary.

By bike/pedelec (e-bike)

The city of Siegen has Germany's longest "covered" cycle path (large parts of the cycle path between Siegen main station and Siegen Geisweid run underneath the city's HTS highway). Somewhat more centrally, one lane on the main road connecting the districts of Geisweid, Weidenau. and Siegen city center has been rededicated as an "environmental lane" for bus and bicycle traffic. Most of the route between the locations on Haardter Berg (Adolf-Reichwein-Straße (AR), Hölderlinstraße (H), Paul-Bonatz-Straße (PB). and Artur-Woll-Haus (AH) campus) and the city center (Unteres Schloss (US) campus, Sandstraße, Friedrichstraße (F), Am Herrengarten (AH), and Fürst Johann Moritz Quartier) can be easily covered by bike/pedelec using this environmental lane. Overall, a pedelec (e-bike) is recommended for intra-campus travel, as the locations are generally on hills that even experienced athletes will find challenging.

By car

There are various free parking options on the Haardter Berg. There are no free parking spaces in the city center. For drivers, there are "Park&Ride" facilities in Leimbachstraße, in Seelbach near the Freudenberg highway exit, in Geisweid near the ZOB and near the lower town opposite the Siegerlandhalle, from which - for those who do not want to change directly to the bus - carpools can be formed to the university locations.

In Germany, students must purchase health insurance. For those aged 25 and below, you can generally be covered as a dependent by your parents’ insurance. Those who are married or in a civil partnership can also continue to be covered by family insurance beyond this age. Please inform your statutory health insurance provider immediately that you wish to enroll at the University of Siegen for the coming semester. Your statutory health insurance company will transmit your insurance status to the University electronically. The statutory health insurance companies offer reduced rates for students up to the age of 30, as well as answer any questions you may have.

If you decide to take out private health insurance, you must immediately apply for an exemption from the statutory health insurance obligation at a statutory health insurance company of your choice. This exemption is necessary in order to enroll at the University of Siegen. If you are exempted from the statutory health insurance obligation, the statutory health insurance company will automatically transmit your insurance status electronically to the University.

Please note that students who have been exempted from the statutory health insurance obligation during their studies can no longer return to the student tariff of statutory health insurance at a later date.

c) Student self-administration

Student bodies in NRW have the right to manage their own affairs. To this end, students draw up their own statutes and elect representatives at student council and university level. The constituted student body comprises all student structures within the university. It promotes the cultural, political and social participation of students and enables them to shape the university environment themselves.

The student body

All students at the university together form the student body and thus the basis of the whole. Based on this, there are various committees and organizational forms, some of which are elected (StuPa, AStA, FSRs) and others are open to all who wish to participate (autonomous departments, student initiatives). All committees and groups meet in public.

Student Parliament (StuPa)

The Student Parliament (StuPa) is the parliament of the student body. Elections are held every year (usually in June). University political lists are elected, some of which are based on parties, others are independent of parties. The StuPa's tasks include making decisions on matters concerning the student body, work assignments and monitoring the AStA, delegating representatives to various committees and much more. Above all, however, it decides on the student body's budget.

The General Students' Committee (AStA)

The General Students' Committee (AStA) is elected by the StuPa and is the executive body of the student body. It represents the interests of the students internally (e.g. towards the University) Senate and university management) and externally (e.g. media, press and public). The AStA has officers each with a specific area of responsibility. The organization of the AStA store and advice in the social department are just as much a part of the tasks as the financial processing of the semester ticket.

Fachschaften (Departmental Student Associations)

The Fachschaften, and their associated Departmental Representative Councils (Fachschaftsrat, FSR) represent the interests and concerns of the students within a given faculty or degree program vis-à-vis the Faculty Council, Dean's Office, and lecturers. They are the first point of contact for problems with lecturers, studies, and everything that happens at the level of the individual departments or faculties. Representatives from the FSRs are often involved in the creation of new study regulations, sit on appointment committees for new professors, and organize the student first semester introductions. All departmental student associations are listed and linked under the following link: www.uni-siegen.de/start/die_universitaet/organisation/studentische_selbstverwaltung

Autonomous committees

Originally, the AStA officers were also assigned to committees such as the Women's Affairs Committee Department, International Students Committee , etc. They organized and represented their interests. However, as it was not particularly clear why an AStA officer should speak or act for these groups, these committees were spun off and given their own structures and funds (hence 'autonomous'). Over time, a few more autonomous committees were added to represent special interests independently of the AStA and StuPa. The autonomous committees are allocated their own funds by the StuPa and must submit their own budget to the AStA. They are not elected, but are open to anyone who agrees with their objectives. An overview can be found on the AStA homepage:

www.asta.uni-siegen.de/index.php/studis/referate/
