B) Questions regarding the content of the Master's degree program in (Education and) Social Work, the introduction to the program, the organization of the program and academic advising

  • In order to make the start of the Master's degree program in Social Work more flexible and easier, the introductory seminar (1 SWS) has been offered since the summer semester 2023 in the form of freely selectable individual courses, which are spread over the summer semester (before the actual start of studies) and the winter semester of the start of studies (1 work unit corresponds to a seminar session of 1.5 hours). Courses can be attended before the actual start of studies:
  • In the summer semester (see event number 2EP100208V in unisono for current times and locations):
  • Information event on the Master's degree program in Social Work (three alternative dates in May, June and July of each year, 1 work unit each)
  • Monday, September 14, 2026: Compact day with introduction, timetabling and formation of working and interest groups (5 work units). Note: The compact day is also listed under the event number 2EP100200V in the winter semester!
  • In the winter semester (current dates in unisono, course number 2EP100200V):
  • Friday afternoon in the first week of the semester (October 16, 2026) to present the main areas of study and to get to know the responsible lecturers (3 work units)
  • Two one-and-a-half-hour appointments to get to know the additional offers and opportunities at the University of Siegen and to support you in the further course of your studies (1 work unit each)
  • Final meeting at the end of the semester with a review of the first semester and a look ahead to the second semester (1 session)

  • In order to obtain the credit point in Module 1 (Introduction to Studies), you should actively participate in at least six work units offered in the summer or winter semester and contribute to a session protocol (via an online platform). The eligible courses are as follows (1 work unit corresponds to a seminar session of 1.5 hours):
  • In the summer semester (see event number 2EP100208V in unisono for current times and locations).
  • Information event on the Master's degree program in Social Work (three alternative dates: in May, June and July of each year, 1 work unit each)
  • Monday, September 14, 2026: Compact day with introduction, timetable design and formation of working and interest groups (5 work units) Note: The compact day is also listed under event number 2EP100200V in the winter semester!
  • In the winter semester (current dates in unisono, event number 2EP100200V):
  • Friday afternoon in the first week of the semester (October 16, 2026) to present the main areas of study and to get to know the responsible lecturers (3 work units)
  • Two one-and-a-half-hour appointments to get to know the additional offers and opportunities at the University of Siegen and to support you in the further course of your studies (1 work unit each)
  • Final meeting at the end of the semester with a review of the first semester and a look ahead to the second semester (1 session)

The module element can be taken flexibly in the summer semester, in the winter semester or in a mixture of summer and winter semesters. There are alternatives to each course that you can choose from.

  • At the one-day event (every September), you can receive support in creating a timetable and booking courses. If you are unable to attend the event, you can also create a timetable and take courses independently.
  • Please use the following recommendations for choosing courses in the first semester as a guide:
  • Full-time students
  • Part-time students
  • The course catalog for the winter semester(unisono) is published at the end of July, the course catalog for the summer semester at the end of January. You can access the course information from the time of publication even if you are not yet enrolled and do not yet have access data. To do this, go to "Courses", then to "Show course catalog" and select "Social work" via "Master's degree programs". You will then see a list of modules and below that the individual module elements and seminars. You will need your unisono access data to register for the courses. There are three registration periods for courses in the winter semester: the first registration period begins in mid-August, the second registration period begins in mid-September and the third registration period begins at the beginning of October and extends into the lecture period. This means that courses can also be booked up to the first or second week of lectures.

If you are enrolled at the University of Siegen (also in another degree program), please register for the courses in unisono (if you are enrolled in the summer semester: course number 2EP100208V, if you are enrolled in the winter semester: course number 2EP100200V). If you are not (yet) enrolled, please register by e-mail (to michael.mayerle@uni-siegen.de).

Registration for the coursework in unisono always takes place in the winter semester - regardless of whether you attended individual courses in the summer semester.

  • Study plans (full-time or part-time) can be found in the subject examination regulations (FPO) for the Master's in Social Work.
  • The study plans show the recommended distribution of credits over the standard period of study of four semesters (full-time students) or eight semesters (part-time students). The Master's degree course is largely flexible, i.e. the order of the module elements or seminars that you attend is not prescribed in most cases, but can be handled flexibly (it is recommended that you complete a module within one to two semesters).
  • The modules Introduction to Studies and Research Methods/Research Practice I and II are an exception. The introductory seminar should be taken in the first semester. The research practice seminar regularly starts in the winter semester (module element 2MASAMA15.2) and is usually continued in the following two semesters with the same lecturer and the same seminar group (2MASAMA16.1 and -16.2).

The same module elements, courses, study and examination achievements are taken or acquired on the part-time degree course as on the full-time degree course, only the standard period of study varies: It is four semesters for the full-time course and eight semesters for the part-time course. We recommend taking the full-time course if you have little or no time restrictions due to work or other commitments (e.g. care work) or stress. The part-time degree program is recommended, for example, for part-time employees or care workers who have a limited amount of time to devote to their studies. Please note that the standard period of study is not identical to the actual duration of study, but depends primarily on how many course and examination credits you can earn per semester. Please contact the Studentenwerk Siegen for information on the possible effects of the duration of studies on BAföG entitlement. Please also note that the student fees per semester are the same for full-time and part-time courses.

The flexibility of study is demonstrated above all by the possibility in most modules to study the module elements in any order (does not apply to the research methods/research practice modules) - also deviating from the exemplary course of study (appendix to the FPO-M). This means that the timetable can be arranged from semester to semester according to your own time constraints. It is also possible to vary the scope of the seminars attended and the credit points earned from semester to semester. The seminars are spread over the whole week and the weekend and there are no exclusive courses for part-time students. All courses can therefore be attended by all Master's students in Social Work. With an average acquisition of 30 credit points (CP) per semester, the standard period of study is four semesters, with 15 CP eight semesters. In addition, depending on the amount of credits earned, an individual study period of five, six, seven or nine semesters, for example, is also possible. Flexibility on the part of the study organization is also evident in the degree: most module elements or seminars are offered once a year, so that students have the opportunity to take a seminar at least twice in a standard period of study of four semesters. If a seminar is required shortly before graduation, which could not be offered by the university on a regular basis, or if no seminar place could be made available - despite the seminar taking place - an application can be made to the examination office for an alternative seminar to be credited.

  • Example for the choice of seminars in the first semester (exemplary course of study for full-time students):
  • Module 2MASAMA01: Attendance of the introductory seminar (1 CP) and reflection on a conference visit (1 CP)
Module 2MASAMA02: Attendance of one of the seminars in module element 2.1 or 2.2 (3 CP)
Modules 2MASAMA03 to -05 or 1SOWIMAEX02: Attendance of a seminar in a first compulsory elective module on "Fundamental questions of education and social work" and completion of a graded examination (e.g. by means of an academic term paper) (3 + 3 = 6 CP) Modules 2MASAMA06 to -14: Attendance of a seminar in a first compulsory elective module on "Fundamental questions of education and social work" and completion of a graded examination (e.g. by means of an academic term paper) (3 + 3 = 6 CP). through academic term paper) (3 + 3 = 6 CP)
Modules 2MASAMA06 to -14: Attendance of a seminar in the first module of the selected "Interdisciplinary focus area" and completion of a graded examination (e.g. through academic term paper) (4 + 3 = 6 CP). (e.g. academic term paper) (4 + 4 = 8 CP)
Modules 2MASAMA06 to -14: Attendance of a seminar in the second module of the selected "Interdisciplinary focus area" (4 CP)
    Module 2MASAMA15: Research methods/research practice I: Attendance of a seminar 'Research methods' in module element 2MASAMA15.1 and a research practice seminar/workshop in module element 2MASAMA15.2 (3 + 3 = 6 CP)
  • Total: 29 CP

  • If you are studying part-time, you can extend your Master's degree to eight semesters. This means that you should complete approximately half of the credit points recommended for full-time students per semester.
  • Example for the choice of seminars in the first semester (exemplary course of study for part-time students):
  • Module 2MASAMA01: Attendance of the introductory seminar (1 CP)
Module 2MASAMA02: Attendance of one of the seminars in module element 2.1 or 2.2 and completion of a graded examination (e.g. by means of an academic term paper) (3 + 1 CP). (e.g. academic term paper) (3 + 3 = 6 CP)
Modules 2MASAMA06 to -14: Attendance of a seminar in the first module of the selected "Interdisciplinary focus area" and completion of a graded examination (e.g. academic term paper) (4 + 4 = 8 CP)
  • Total: 15 CP

You can find the courses offered in the central university system unisono. You can also access most of the information if you have not yet received your login details and/or are not registered. Go to "Courses", then to "Show course catalog" and select "Social Work" and "2024-1" via "Master's degree programs". You will then see a list of modules and below that the individual module elements and seminars.

  • The courses offered are coordinated between the Schools/Institutes involved in the degree program for each individual semester and reviewed several times. It is based on the requirements of the current Master's examination regulations for Education and Social Work. The module descriptions contain information on the frequency and location of the modules. As a rule, each module element (seminar) is offered at least once a year. If you are unable to attend the seminar, for example because you are unable to attend at the time, you will find the next offer in the relevant module element in one year at the latest.
  • If you are missing a certain module element shortly before graduation because it was not offered regularly or you did not get a place in a seminar, please clarify with the Examinations Office (e-mail)
to find out whether you can attend an alternative seminar instead, in which you can complete the course.

  • At the end of the course cataloging phase (usually shortly before the new course catalog is published in unisono), the available dates are checked for overlaps. If there are any overlaps, lecturers are asked to consider rescheduling.
  • Status report for the winter semester (as of September 15, 2025): The coordination of dates has been completed. There are still a few overlapping dates for seminars, but there are alternatives in the same module element.

The course catalog (unisono) is usually released for viewing ten weeks before the start of lectures (e.g. end of July 2025 for winter semester 2025/26). There are generally three deadlines for enrolment in the Master's degree program in (Education and) Social Work: The first deadline begins in mid-August, the second deadline begins in mid-September and the third deadline begins in early October and extends into the lecture period. In order for students to be able to exercise their options, most courses can be taken or changed until the second or third week of the lecture period.

No, you must register for each individual course and examination within the published deadlines in unisono.

The registration deadlines for coursework and examinations are published on the website of the Examinations Office.

The course offerings are compiled in a multi-stage process - with the involvement of the responsible committees and institute conferences - and checked for completeness. Nevertheless, it can happen that at the time of publication of the course catalog, individual seminars are missing or do not yet contain the complete information. This can have various causes, but is usually due to vacancies in individual staff positions. You can assume that possible gaps (missing seminars or missing information on times) will be filled as quickly as possible, if necessary with the help of teaching assignments.

In principle, it is possible for students from other Master's degree programs at the University of Siegen to attend courses on the Master's degree program in (Education and) Social Work if their subject examination regulations provide for or permit this and if there are sufficient seminar places. Please note the examination regulations that apply to you and the corresponding recommendations of your program director or coordinator. We do not recommend that external Master's students attend courses in the modules 2MASAMA01 (Introduction to Studies; Academic and Professional Perspectives), 2MASAMA15 and 2MASAMA16 (Research Methods/Research Practice I and II). The following applies to all other modules: If seminar places are available, the module elements can be taken and studied in any order. The following applies to coursework and examinations: The form and scope of the coursework will be announced no later than four weeks after the start of the course or courses.

The full-time lecturers are responsible for advising students on the Master's degree course in (Education and) Social Work together with the subject advisor for Education and Social Work. At least three information sessions are offered to prospective students in the summer semester, during which individual questions can be clarified. For students in their first semester, the introductory Master's seminar (Module 1) provides a space for individual planning and structuring of the course. The other Master's students (Education and) Social Work can takeadvantage of individual advice from the academic advisor
for example if they have questions about planning their individual course of study.
