Information for New Students
Starting university marks an exciting new chapter in your life, bringing many changes and important questions: "How do I create my class schedule?", "How will I manage my finances?", "What is campus life really like?", "What does the city of Siegen have to offer me?" To help you get started on the right foot, we've gathered the most essential information about beginning your university journey.

Essential information at a glance
Application, enrollment, transfer, withdrawal
You must apply for restricted-admission bachelor's degree programs by 15 July of each year. Information about the application process can be found here.
If you would like to study a degree program without admission restrictions or have been admitted to a degree program with admission restrictions, you must enroll in order to begin your studies. You can find all further information on enrollment (also known as "matriculation") here.
In some degree programs, further requirements such as aptitude tests or pre-study internships must also be met regardless of admission restrictions. Details can be found in the course descriptions.
If you have been admitted to another degree program and would like to change after you have already enrolled, you can transfer to the other degree program without re-enrolling. Please contact the Registrar's Office.
If you wish to withdraw from your studies after you have already enrolled, please contact the Registrar's Office immediately. Fees that have already been paid can be refunded by the end of September or the end of March at the latest.
Uni Siegen app and student ID card (digital and printable)
The Uni Siegen app is a practical companion for everyday university life. Information on installation and functions can be found at https://www.uni-siegen.de/campusapp/. The Uni Siegen app offers a digital student and library card.
In addition, a student ID card and enrollment certificates are available to all enrolled students as PDF files for printing in their personal unisono account under "My studies" -> "Student services" -> "Notifications/certificates" tab.
Student email address / Access to the digital learning platform "Moodle"
All students are assigned a University of Siegen email address by the university's Center for Information and Media Technology (ZIMT, see chapter VI: Who can help me?) upon enrollment. Once assigned, you can activate the account on your own via your personal unisono account. Simply log into unisono, click on the "Student life" button in the top navigation bar, and then on "ZIMT account" in the left-hand navigation bar. Click on the link provided there and your student email address will be activated automatically. The university email system "Webmail" is linked on all landing pages of the University of Siegen, and can also be reached at mail.uni-siegen.de
Please check your student email account regularly, as all official letters, including the fee statements for the upcoming semester, are sent there. Please use your student email address solely for internal university communication (with lecturers, the Registrar's Office, examination offices, service facilities, etc.) so that the staff can recognize you as a student of the University of Siegen. You have the option of setting up forwarding to your private address for incoming university emails.
The Center for Information and Media Technology (ZIMT) of the University of Siegen offers a web-based learning management system called "Moodle", which allows for virtual course rooms to accompany classroom teaching as well as other academic functions. In order to gain access to the documents stored by lecturers in Moodle, you must first have activated your student email address or your ZIMT account. Further information on this can be found at: www.zimt.uni-siegen.de/zielgruppen/studienanfaenger/
What is unisono and how does it work?
You can use the unisono online portal to plan and organize your studies. Here you will find the following important information and options:
- Application for study places
- Courses for all degree programs and subjects (location, time, lecturer, description, booking)
- Creation of timetables
- Lecturer details (address, office hours etc.)
- Registration for internships
- Exam registration and deregistration
- Printout of current study certificates that you need to present to other offices etc.
You can access unisono via the following link: unisono.uni-siegen.de/. The following video tutorials and the unisono wiki provide an introduction to the portal.
The library
As an academic institution of the University of Siegen, the University Library ensures the supply of literature and information for university members in research, teaching and studies. The University Library's collections and other services are spread over several locations. Modern book scanners are also available in each branch library. The following link provides an overview of which subjects are represented in which library location: https://www.ub.uni-siegen.de/standorte-und-oeffnungszeiten/#c5551
Students of the University of Siegen can activate a digital library card in the university app, which entitles them to borrow media from the library (see below) free of charge. However, fees will be charged if loan periods are exceeded. Jackets, bags, food and drinks may not be taken into the library. There are lockers in the entrance area of all locations.
As part of a differentiated training program, the library teaches important skills for efficient literature and information research. You can find the current dates here: https://www.ub.uni-siegen.de/auskunft-und-schulungen/
Registering for courses via unisono
You can use the online portal unisono to plan and organize your studies. Courses must be registered for in unisono before the start of lectures. By registering, you indicate your interest in attending the course. Please note the general registration deadlines, which are published in the menu item "Courses" in the submenu "Show course catalog". There is usually an extended deadline for first semester courses. However, the respective institution decides whether there is a deadline for attending a course. Please always direct any questions about this to the respective Schools or chair. Further information can be found in the help section of the unisono online system by selecting the menu item "?".
How do I create my timetable?
The examination regulations (PO) regulate the basic structures of all degree programs. The subject-specific regulations (FSB) and subject examination regulations (FPO) regulate the content and requirements of the individual subjects offered in the degree program. The documents are accompanied by study plans that show the recommended exemplary course of study in the individual subjects. Supplementary regulations are contained in the module handbooks and the internship regulations of the respective Schools. The module handbooks can also be part of the appendix under the title "Module description". Before starting your studies, we recommend that you at least take a look at the curriculum of your degree program so that you know which modules are planned for the start of your studies. Please also read the relevant module handbook to find out what content and requirements you can expect from each module and how and when you can successfully complete the module. Once you have found the courses you want to/should attend in your first semester on the basis of this research, please do not forget to register for them in unison before the start of lectures. Examination regulations and study plans: www.uni-siegen.de/start/studium/organisation_finanzierung/pruefungsordnungen.html
Preliminary courses
For some degree programs and subjects, preliminary courses are offered to make it easier to start studying. These can be attended voluntarily by first-year students. The preliminary courses usually take place in the weeks before the start of the semester. For example, various mathematics pre-courses are regularly offered to prepare students for the relevant degree programs. We strongly recommend that first-year (teacher training) bachelor's students in mathematics, natural sciences, engineering and economics courses/subjects take part in the preliminary courses. More detailed information on the course period and registration can be found at www.uni-siegen.de/zsb/vorkurse from mid-February or mid-August.
First semester introduction (ESE)
Introductory events are held for all first-year students before the start of lectures - the so-called ESE (first semester introduction), during which help is usually also offered with timetabling. There are additional offers for international first-year students, which are specifically pointed out upon admission. The ESE program will be published from mid-February or mid-August under the following link: www.uni-siegen.de/zsb/erstsemestereinfuehrung

Rooms in student halls of residence
You can apply for an affordable room in a student hall of residence via the Studierendenwerk Siegen. Please note that experience has shown that the number of applicants for student halls of residence exceeds the number of rooms available, i.e. you are not guaranteed a place in a hall of residence. You can get an initial overview on the following websites: www.studierendenwerk-siegen.de/index.php
There are also some halls of residence that are run by private providers. The following website provides an overview: www.uni-siegen.de/start/studium/studentisches_leben/wohnen.html
Apartment
The classified ads in the local daily newspapers as well as the free weekly newspapers also contain housing offers:
" Siegerländer Wochenanzeiger www.swa-wwa.de
" Siegener Zeitung www.siegener-zeitung.de
" Westfalenpost www.wp.immowelt.de/
There are a large number of real estate search portals on the Internet that also have rental offers for students, shared flats etc.. A good overview can be found on the website of the Dual Career Service of the University of Siegen: www.uni-siegen.de/dualcareer/wohnungsmarkt/?lang=de
It is also possible to search for an apartment through private estate agents. However, estate agents usually charge a brokerage fee of two months' rent plus VAT when brokering an apartment.
Another option is housing partnerships between landlords who want help with the household or running the business and students who offer to help for a lower rent. These partnerships are arranged via the online portal www.mitwohnen.org, for example .

Anyone moving to Siegen must register or deregister at the Citizens' Registration Office (Einwohnermeldeamt). The city of Siegen has citizens' offices at four locations (Eiserfeld, Geisweid, Siegen, Weidenau).
If you move to a municipality outside Siegen, you must register at the local residents' registration office (usually in the town hall).
Please inform the Registrar's Office of your new address after your move so that the University of Siegen's post can reach you. Please do not forget to put your name on the mailbox.
Reimbursement of the Deutschland-Semesterticket
If you move to Siegen and register your main residence there for the first time, you can have the fee for the Deutschland-Semesterticket refunded once. To do this, go to the AStA office (AR-Campus, room AR-H 105) with your certificate of enrollment and confirmation of registration.
Studibus for the move
In order to support any relocations, the AStA of the University of Siegen cooperates with the company "einfach mobil Carsharing GmbH", which offers an uncomplicated and particularly inexpensive car rental service for students with its online platform "Studibus". Students at the University of Siegen can take advantage of this offer. You can get the Studibus and the customer card at the partner petrol station Aral in Sandstraße in Siegen (the petrol station is located between the bus stops Kaisergarten and Emilienstraße). You can find more information here: studibus.de/city/siegen

Germany semester ticket
All students at the University of Siegen purchase the Germany Semester Ticket with their semester fee, which allows you to use local public transport throughout Germany at low cost. You can find all the information here.
By bus
You can reach the university locations quickly and easily by public transport.
University locations on the Haardter Berg: Adolf-Reichwein-Straße (AR), Hölderlinstraße (H), Paul-Bonatz-Straße (PB) and Artur-Woll-Haus (AH) campus:
Accessible from Siegen main station/ZOB and Weidenau station/ZOB Weidenau all year round with bus lines C 106 and C 111 and, from the week before the start of lectures (ESE week) until one week after the end of the lecture period, with the University express lines UX 1 (from Siegen main station/ZOB), UX 2 (from Siegen-Weidenau station/ZOB Weidenau) and UX 5 (from Langenholdinghausen - "Wildrose" residential complex via Siegen-Geisweid station / ZOB-Geisweid). The Emmy Noether Campus (ENC) and Haardter Berg are connected to the UX 4/6 during the times mentioned.
Emmy Noether Campus (ENC)
From Siegen main station/ZOB to the Emmy-Noether-Campus (ENC) stop all year round with C 114 and from the week before the start of lectures (ESE week) until one week after the end of the lecture period with the UX 4/6 from the university locations on Haardter Berg (AR, H, PB) and from Kölner Tor (city center).
University locations in the city center: Campus Unteren Schloss (US), Sandstraße, Friedrichstraße (F), Am Herrengarten (AH) and Fürst Johann Moritz Quartier
The locations in the city center can be reached within a quarter of an hour's walk from Siegen central station/ZOB and the Kölner Tor stop. From the locations on Haardter Berg (AR, H, PB and AE) as well as from Siegen main station Siegen/ZOB and Siegen-Weidenau/ZOB Weidenau station, the locations in the city center can be reached with the C 111 line and from the week before the start of lectures (ESE week) until one week after the end of lectures with the UX 1 and UX 4/6 (Kölner Tor stop). During these times, the Emmy Noether Campus (ENC) and Siegen city center are connected by the UX 4/6 (Kölner Tor stop).
For people with limited mobility, the US campus can be reached from Siegen main station/ZOB with lines C 105, C 106 and C 107 to the Löhrtor stop and then, if necessary, via the elevator in Mensa US (Obergraben 18). Please note that the elevator is only accessible during the opening hours of the Mensa. Please also note that the return journey with the above lines is only possible by changing at Siegen-Weidenau/ZOB Weidenau station.
You can find all the information in graphic form here.
To use public transport, we recommend the mobil.nrw app or the VWS app.
On foot
It is possible to move between the university locations on the Haardter Berg (Adolf-Reichwein-Straße (AR), Hölderlinstraße (H), Paul-Bonatz-Straße (PB) and Artur-Woll-Haus (AH) campus) within 15-30 minutes on foot. It is also possible to switch between the locations in the city center Campus Unteren Schloss (US), Sandstraße, Friedrichstraße (F), Am Herrengarten (AH) and Fürst Johann Moritz Quartier within 15-30 minutes. Please note that it is not possible to change between the city center, Haardter Berg and Emmy-Noether-Campus (ENC) due to the distance of approx. 5 kilometers. We recommend using public transportation or a bike/pedelec (e-bike).
Most of the locations are on hills. As a result, you can expect slopes on the way to most locations. We ask people with limited mobility to take this into account and to plan their journey by bus if necessary.
By bike/pedelec (e-bike)
The city of Siegen has Germany's longest "covered" cycle path (large parts of the cycle path between Siegen main station and Siegen Geisweid run underneath the city highway - HTS). Somewhat more centrally, one lane on the main road connecting the districts of Geisweid, Weidenau and Siegen city center has been rededicated as an "environmental lane" for bus and bicycle traffic. Most of the route between the locations on Haardter Berg (Adolf-Reichwein-Straße (AR), Hölderlinstraße (H), Paul-Bonatz-Straße (PB) and Artur-Woll-Haus (AH) campus) and the city center (Unteren Schloss (US) campus, Sandstraße, Friedrichstraße (F), Am Herrengarten (AH) and Fürst Johann Moritz Quartier) can be easily covered by bike/pedelec via this environmental lane. Overall, a pedelec (e-bike) is recommended for reaching the locations, most of which are located on hills, or it can be considered a sporting challenge.
By car
There are various free parking options on the Haardter Berg. There are no free parking spaces in the city center. For drivers, there are "Park&Ride" facilities in Leimbachstraße, in Seelbach near the Freudenberg highway exit, in Geisweid near the ZOB and near the lower town opposite the Siegerlandhalle, from which - for those who do not want to change directly to the bus - carpools can be formed to the university locations.

c) Student self-administration
Student bodies in NRW have the right to manage their own affairs. To this end, students draw up their own statutes and elect representatives at student council and university level. The constituted student body comprises all student structures within the university. It promotes the cultural, political and social participation of students and enables them to shape the university environment themselves.
The student body
All students at the university together form the student body and thus the basis of the whole. Based on this, there are various committees and organizational forms, some of which are elected (StuPa, AStA, FSRs) and others are open to all who wish to participate (autonomous departments, student initiatives). All committees and groups meet in public.
Student Parliament (StuPa)
The Student Parliament (StuPa) is the parliament of the student body. Elections are held every year (usually in June). University political lists are elected, some of which are based on parties, others are independent of parties. The StuPa's tasks include making decisions on matters concerning the student body, work assignments and monitoring the AStA, delegating representatives to various committees and much more. Above all, however, it decides on the student body's budget.
The General Students' Committee (AStA)
The General Students' Committee (AStA) is elected by the StuPa and is the executive body of the student body. It represents the interests of the students internally (e.g. towards the University) Senate and university management) and externally (e.g. media, press and public). The AStA has officers each with a specific area of responsibility. The organization of the AStA store and advice in the social department are just as much a part of the tasks as the financial processing of the semester ticket.

The student councils
The Student Representative Councils (FSRe) are the student Representations of Interests at subject level. They represent the interests and concerns of the students of a Schools or a specific degree program vis-à-vis the Faculty Council, Dean's Office and lecturers. They are the first point of contact for problems with lecturers, studies and everything that happens at the level of the individual subjects or Schools. Representatives from the FSRs are often involved in the creation of new study regulations, sit on appointment committees for new professors and organize the student first semester introductions. All student councils are listed and linked under the following link: www.uni-siegen.de/start/die_universitaet/organisation/studentische_selbstverwaltung
Autonomous departments
Originally, the AStA officers were also assigned to departments such as the Women's Department, Foreigners' Department, etc.. They organized and represented their interests. However, as it was not particularly clear why an AStA officer should speak or act for these groups, these departments were spun off and given their own structures and funds (hence 'autonomous'). Over time, a few more autonomous departments were added, which represent special interests independently of the AStA and StuPa. The autonomous departments are allocated their own funds by the StuPa and must submit their own budget to the AStA. They are not elected, but are open to anyone who feels addressed by their objectives. An overview can be found on the AStA homepage: www.asta.uni-siegen.de/index.php/studis/referate/
The central emergency number 0271/740-2111 applies to all acute emergencies on the university campus.
