The appeal procedure

The appointment procedure at the University of Siegen follows clearly defined procedural steps and is based on the Higher Education Act of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the appointment regulations of the University of Siegen.

Since 2015, the University of Siegen has carried the seal of approval of the German Association of University Professors and Lecturers (DHV) for fair and transparent appointment negotiations. Following a successful re-audit, the seal was awarded for a further five years in 2023.

The appointment monitor ensures transparency in the appointment process.

You can view the current status of your application at any time via your personal profile on the University of Siegen's job portal. For example, you can track whether you have been invited to a trial lecture or are on an appointment list.

Advertisement and application

The entire appointment process - from advertisement to recruitment - takes place digitally via our job portal.
After registering with your e-mail address, you create a personal user account where you can upload your application documents and easily apply for an advertised professorship.
If your application is not yet complete, you can save it at any time and complete it later.

Trial lectures

After reviewing all applications received, the appointment committee usually invites at least six suitable candidates to a trial lecture followed by a personal interview.

Assessment and list compilation

After the trial presentations, external comparative assessments of the most promising candidates are obtained. Based on the results of the entire selection process, the appointment committee draws up an appointment proposal, which usually contains three individual proposals in a fixed order.

The appointment

Once the Faculty Council has decided on the appointment proposal and the Rectorate has discussed it, the person ranked first is appointed to the advertised professorship.

The appointment negotiation

After receiving the appointment, you negotiate with the university about the general conditions of your professorship, including equipment and benefits. A concept must be submitted in preparation for the appointment negotiations.

Acceptance of the appointment

After successful negotiations, you will receive an offer for equipment and salary as well as an appointment agreement. By signing this agreement, you formally accept the appointment.

Recruitment process

After accepting the appointment, the Human Resources Department will contact you to initiate the next steps for your appointment or recruitment. The necessary documents will be requested, including a medical certificate and a certificate of good conduct.
At the same time, the Dual Career Service (link) will help you to identify career prospects for your partner in the region or support your arrival as a family.

In principle, the appointment as a university professor is made on a civil servant basis. If the requirements under civil service law are not met, an employment contract is concluded instead. The appointment procedure ends with the appointment or the conclusion of an employment contract.

Recruitment requirements for professorships

Applicants for an advertised professorship must fulfill various recruitment requirements:

  • the statutory standard recruitment requirements (Section 36 HG NRW),
  • the general requirements under employment law and
  • the professional requirements for the specific position (requirements profile).

The statutory standard recruitment requirements are set out in Section 36 of the NRW Higher Education Act. Details on this and further procedural information for the respective job type can be found under the adjacent link.
