Fit for the technical paper

Lena Heinrich

The University Library (UB) and the Center for Academic Writing (ZefaS) at the University of Siegen are making school students from the region "Fit for the paper". The new free research and writing advice service starts in November.

The new service "Fit for the paper" supports students with literature research and the writing process.

Many students face similar challenges when it comes to writing their dissertation: Where can I find suitable scientific literature? How do I formulate a good research question? And how do I incorporate sources correctly into my text? Answers to these questions are provided by the new free support service "Fit für die Facharbeit" from the University Library and the Center for Academic Writing (ZefaS), which has been part of the University Library since 1 July 2025.

Research consultation and writing advice

"Fit für die Facharbeit" starts in November 2025 and runs until January 2026. In consultation hours of up to 45 minutes, students receive individual advice in two central areas: The research consultation hour helps with all questions relating to academic literature searches - from dealing with the online catalog and the databases of the University Library to the use of artificial intelligence in research and practical support in downloading, scanning or borrowing relevant literature from the University Library's collection. In the writing advice service, students receive help with all aspects of their writing process. For example, the staff provide tips on formulating a research question, support with incorporating academic sources into your own text or checking the line of argument, and answer questions on time management and the use of AI in academic writing.

Bridge between school and university

In this way, the University Library and ZefaS are making support services for the promotion of writing and research skills accessible outside the university. This joint offer is intended to build a bridge between school and university in order to introduce pupils to scientific work at an early stage.

The offer is designed to be low-threshold: Prior registration for consultation hours is not necessary. Pupils can drop by on Wednesdays between 4 and 6 p.m. in room AR-UB 038 on the first floor of the main library on Adolf-Reichwein-Straße - either for an individual consultation or as a small group of two or three people. Schools and teachers who have questions about the service or require further information can contact the UB team by e-mail at
by e-mail.
