The German plant and machinery manufacturing industry is facing increasing international competitive pressure. As a result, companies are increasingly focusing on service-based business models, such as Product-Service Systems (PSS), which combine products with services.

Implementing a PSS business model offers the prospect of increased customer loyalty, new revenue models, and sustainable efficiency gains. Despite these advantages, the adoption of PSS business models remains limited, as their implementation is considered complex and risky. Drawing on a systematic literature review and expert interviews, this study demonstrates how risk governance can support plant and machinery manufacturing companies in successfully implementing a PSS business model.
