Sirens, warning apps and cell broadcasting - and the University of Siegen app: on the nationwide warning day on September 11, numerous ways of reaching the population will be tested.

On Thursday, September 11, 2025, the nationwide warning day will take place. From 11:00 a.m., various warning devices will be triggered throughout Germany - including in North Rhine-Westphalia and at the University of Siegen campuses. The aim of the trial alert is to raise public awareness, optimize warning processes and test the interaction of different systems.

This is the warning:

  • Sirens will sound at 11 a.m. in University of Siegen and the surrounding area, including on the University's campuses.
  • Warning messages in the NINA and KATWARN apps and via cell broadcast to mobile devices
  • Some warnings appear on digital billboards in public spaces

Warning in the University of Siegen app

The University of Siegen app will also be included in the warning day. Users will receive a "Critical Alert" on a trial basis - comparable to NINA or KATWARN. This will test whether the app can be used as an additional warning tool in emergencies in the future.

Anyone wishing to take part in the test and the subsequent short survey in the app should install the latest version of the University of Siegen app (3.135.1) in the Google Play Store or App Store. After the update, it is important to follow the instructions for the settings for critical alarms when opening the app again.
