Responsible for Erasmus+ and visiting the partner universities in Istanbul

Maximilian Schlegel

Following the departure of Prof. Dr. Gerd Morgenthaler, I am now in charge of the Erasmus exchanges as well as Global Exchange and the free movers at DEWR. I am trying to intensify the cooperation, to expand the range of offers and to encourage more students from Siegen to go abroad and to provide good support for the visiting students here.

To this end, I was in Istanbul in May. I met the deans, various colleagues with an interest in the subject and young academics as well as students at our two partner universities, Kadir Has University
and Marmara University.
I also spoke at both universities, which is illustrated by the screenshots from LinkedIn with the posters attached below.

In the lecture "EU Conflict of Laws - Current Status and Future Developments" at the private Kadir Has University, which is located directly on the Golden Horn, I first discussed the importance of international private and civil procedure law, also with regard to the Turkish "Act on International Private and Procedure Law" of2007.
I then discussed the EU body of standards, which also makes a legislative distinction between IPR and ICCPR, while Swiss and Turkish law bring the two areas together. This would also make sense for a feasible overall EU codification in this area. I also discussed the "worse" treatment of third countries (such as Turkey) under the various provisions of the Brussels Ia Regulation (domicile of the defendant, lis pendens and recognition and enforcement of court judgments), which was discussed intensively.

While the contact with Kadir Has was only initiated by me in SS 2022, the relationship with Marmara University, which is located on the Asian side of Istanbul but still central, has existed for a long time. They were particularly pleased about the revival of contact. I gave a lecture on the specifics of German legal training and legal methodology. I illustrated the special features using the general part of the German Civil Code, the principle of abstraction, the multi-level private law of the EU, the control of general terms and conditions according to §§ 305 ff. BGB and company law.
