Visit to Partner Universities in Istanbul in May 2025

To deepen the cooperation with the partner universities, Prof. Rösler visited Istanbul in May 2025.

At the two partner universities, Kadir Has University and Marmara University, Prof. Rösler met with the deans, colleagues with an interest in the field, early-career researchers, and students. He also gave a talk at each university (see the posters below).

In his lecture “EU Conflict of Laws – Current Status and Future Developments” at Kadir Has University, a private institution located directly on the Golden Horn, Prof. Rösler first explained the significance of private international law and international civil procedure, including in light of Turkey’s 2007 “Act on International Private and Procedure Law.” He then presented the body of EU law, which also separates private international law and international civil procedure at the legislative level, whereas Swiss and Turkish law combine both areas—an approach that would also suit a comprehensive EU codification, which is feasible in this field. The “less favorable” treatment of third countries such as Turkey under various provisions of the Brussels Ia Regulation (defendant’s domicile, lis pendens, and the recognition and enforcement of court judgments) was also the subject of intensive discussion.

Prof. Rösler had initiated contact with Kadir Has University only in the summer semester 2022, whereas relations with Marmara University, located on the Asian side of Istanbul yet still central, have long been established. The revival of the exchange was particularly welcomed there. At Marmara University, Prof. Rösler spoke about the distinctive features of German legal education and legal methodology, illustrating them with the General Part of the German Civil Code (BGB), the abstraction principle, the multi-level private law of the EU, the review of standard terms under §§ 305 et seq. BGB, and corporate law.
