Zoom, VPN, and More: New IT Services Are Being Introduced

Several new IT services will be introduced at the University of Siegen over the course of the winter semester—replacing other programs. All employees and students are asked to take note of the relevant deadlines.

An Overview of the Most Important Changes and Deadlines

The current video conferencing tool, WebEx, will be discontinued at the end of the year (Calendar Week 49). ZoomX will be rolled out campus-wide as its successor.

Important: For technical reasons, it is not possible to automatically transfer data from WebEx. Please back up and export all relevant documents, data, and recordings from WebEx in a timely manner (e.g., to your local hard drive, network drives, or Sciebo). After the shutdown in calendar week 49, you will no longer be able to access WebEx.
The chat feature is now also available in ZoomX.

To better protect access to your ZIMT account, a new login procedure is being introduced. Registration for multi-factor authentication (MFA) is now available. The change will become mandatory by the end of October. Guest and alumni accounts are exempt from this requirement. The transition for these accounts will take place at a later date.

In conjunction with the new multi-factor authentication, ZIMT is switching to the eduVPN solution, as the previous OpenVPN client does not support MFA. eduVPN is available for use immediately and will become the mandatory solution over the course of the winter semester.

ZIMT is also enhancing security for the eduroam campus Wi-Fi: With easyroam, you’ll log in using digital certificates on your devices—there’s no need to manually enter a username and password after the one-time setup. The new procedure is available for all devices effective immediately; the old login procedure will be discontinued on November 30, 2026.
