Martin Herchenröder, born in Iserlohn (Westphalia), composer, organist, and musicologist, studied school music, church music, and composition (with D. Gostomsky) at the Cologne University of Music, organ (under L. Lohmann and W. Stockmeier), and composition (under J. Baur and H. W. Henze), as well as German language and literature, education, and musicology at the University of Cologne.

After two years as a lecturer in music theory and composition at the Augsburg Conservatory, he was appointed to a professorship in music theory at the University of Siegen in 1994; from 1992 to 2009, he served as a visiting lecturer at the Cologne University of Music. Guest teaching engagements, primarily in the fields of organ and composition, took him to conservatories and universities in Germany and abroad, including McGill University in Montreal, the University of Chicago, the Chopin Conservatory in Warsaw, and the Juilliard School in New York. In 1998, he served as a visiting professor at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, and in 2015–16 at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen. Since 2008, he has been a visiting professor in the organ and composition departments at the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester, NY, USA.

His compositional work focuses on organ and church music (including commissions from the Bavarian and Rhineland Regional Churches) as well as instrumental music (commissions from various German cities and orchestras as well as the WDR, numerous radio and CD recordings in Europe and the U.S.). World premieres, performances, and appearances at festivals have brought his work to prominence in Europe, Asia, and North America; his works have been performed by soloists such as Markus Stockhausen, Alban Gerhardt, Michael Sanderling, Hans Davidsson, and Werner Jacob, as well as ensembles (including the Arditti Quartet) and orchestras. His works are published by Bärenreiter, among others.

At the heart of his organ repertoire are the works of J. S. Bach as well as contemporary music (radio and CD recordings, various world premieres; concerts in Europe, the U.S., and Canada). Duet partners: Markus Stockhausen (trumpet), Carin Levine (flute), Friedrich Gauwerky (cello), Paulo Alvares (piano), Daniel Hees (drawing). In 1994, he founded the “Studio for New Music” at the University of Siegen, where he serves as artistic director and is responsible for its organization.

His musicological work focuses in particular on contemporary organ music (including a monograph on György Ligeti’s organ works; numerous articles and book chapters in Germany, Austria, and the U.S.).

Curriculum Vitae

Organist, composer, and scholar, Martin Herchenroeder has been a professor at the University of Siegen in Germany since 1994.

His compositions have been performed in Europe, Asia, and America, for example by the Augsburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonia Hungarica, the NCPA Orchestra in Beijing, and other orchestras, as well as by soloists such as Markus Stockhausen (trumpet), Friedrich Gauwerky and Alban Gerhardt (cello), Hans Davidsson and Werner Jacob (organ), the Arditti String Quartet, and others. They have been recorded on CD (Albany, Loft, neos, among others), broadcast by European, Chinese, and North American radio stations, and featured at festivals including the Cologne Triennale and the Beijing Modern Music Festival. Commissioned by cities, institutions, and orchestras, his compositions have been published by Bärenreiter and other publishers.

His solo organ repertoire spans works from the Renaissance to contemporary music, with a special focus on the compositions of J.S. Bach and 20th-century music, including numerous world premieres. He has recorded works spanning various centuries for the WDR broadcasting corporation (Cologne) and CD labels such as Koch Schwann, FFFZ, and neos, among others. He performs and teaches in North America and Europe, including at festivals such as the Göteborg Organ Academy and EROI.

His main scholarly publications focus on contemporary music, particularly contemporary organ music (a book on György Ligeti’s organ works and an edition of the late works by Bengt Hambraeus).

In 1998, he was a visiting artist at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, B.C., Canada; since 2008, he has served annually as a visiting professor in the organ and composition departments at the Eastman School of Music. He has taught classes and given lectures at schools and universities around the world, including the Cologne University of Music, the Bremen University of the Arts, the University of Chicago, McGill University in Montreal, the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, the Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, NYU, and the Juilliard School of Music. In 2015 and 2016, he served as a visiting professor at the Royal Academy of Music in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Professor Herchenröder studied organ with Ludger Lohmann and Wolfgang Stockmeier, music theory and composition with Jürg Baur and Hans Werner Henze, as well as music education and church music at the Cologne Musikhochschule, and pursued further studies in musicology and German literature at the University of Cologne.

Research Focus

Research on music of the present and past within the interplay of music theory, musicology, artistic practice (including composition and performance), and interdisciplinary relationships between the arts (music, literature, and visual arts). This research is both scholarly and artistic in nature and is therefore reflected, on the one hand, in scholarly publications and, on the other, in her own compositional projects. Furthermore, it contributes to the “Studio for New Music” concert series, which invites internationally renowned performers of contemporary music to give concerts, but also provides a platform for students to realize their own projects as performers, improvisers, and composers.

Composition with Language

This artistic project explores compositional connections between music and language: structural analogies and interferences, gray areas between syntax and semantics, interactions in the integration of text and music, shared phenomena such as rhythm and vowel sounds, etc. Experiments with applying musical structures to language play just as much a role here as the transposition of linguistic syntax onto musical processes or the linking of musical semantemes to soundscapes.

Contemporary Organ Music

This research project aims to catalog, analytically evaluate, and contextualize—both within the broader development of music and in relation to one another—stylistically, aesthetically, and technically innovative compositions for organ composed from around 1950 onward. In addition to the works of various composers (e.g., György Ligeti, Bengt Hambraeus), the project focuses on individual significant works as well as overarching questions (compositional techniques, interpretation, performance practice, aesthetics, etc.). An additional aspect is the student’s own compositional exploration of the organ as an instrument.
