Equal opportunities, participation, anti-discrimination

The University of Siegen is committed to equality, diversity and a discrimination-sensitive learning environment. Regardless of gender, age, ethnic or social background, chronic illness and disability, sexual orientation, religion and ideology, all students should have equal educational opportunities.

At the same time, we promote the active participation of all university members in democratic decision-making processes and take a firm stand against discrimination, abuse of power and group-related misanthropy. We strengthen cohesion and shared responsibility through transparent communication and participatory structures.

The University of Siegen understands the diversity of its members as well as different educational biographies as a given, enrichment, innovative-creative potential and quality feature of academic and personal progress. It promotes an open-minded university culture of appreciation and tolerance, in which all its members can develop and contribute their individual abilities and talents regardless of gender, age, language, ethnic, social and economic background, sexual orientation, physical or mental impairment, religion or ideology. They should be supported in actively contributing to a low-barrier, low-discrimination and power-critical university and thus to the fulfillment of structural equal opportunities and the reduction of intersectional inequalities.

The University of Siegen's understanding of teaching and learning as well as its examination and advisory practices are based on the democratic values of equal opportunities, equality, inclusion, participation and anti-discrimination. Gender and diversity skills are both learning objectives in studies and quality features in teaching and university didactics. These require ongoing reflection on teaching and learning practices. Gender and diversity aspects are also taken into account at a structural level, in access to studies and in the curriculum. In the coming years, the University of Siegen aims to further develop and intensify the following aspects, among others:

  • Further training & professionalization in the area of gender & diversity in research, teaching & administration

  • Greater decentralization of diversity policies

  • Support for first-time academics at all career levels

  • Promotion of a TINclUSive university

  • Removal of barriers and promotion of inclusion (implementation of the inclusion concept)

  • Expansion of systematic protection against discrimination, group-related misanthropy (e.g. anti-Semitism, anti-Muslim racism, etc.) and abuse of power and

  • Strengthening a diversity-sensitive organizational culture.

To ensure equal opportunities and in implementation of the diversity policies, the equality concept (the inclusion concept? in development), the guideline for respectful interaction and the code of conduct, all members of the University of Siegen are committed to designing and implementing teaching and learning environments that are sensitive to diversity and discrimination, gender equality, inclusion and low barriers.
